Brazil Accident Today: Deadly Collision Between Bus & Truck in Parana Kills 23; Probe Underway

Brazil Accident Today: Shocking scenes unfolded in the Parana province of Brazil recently when a bus and a truck collided with each other, killing 23 and injuring 5. A probe has been launched. 

Brazil Accident Today: What Happened in Southern Brazil? 

At around 3 AM local time, a minibus and a freight truck, registered out of Erechim (Rio Grande do Sul), had a head on collision after which both vehicles crashed on the BR 373 highway in Southern Brazil. According to locals, the minibus belonged to the health authorities of the nearby city of Imbituva and was transporting patients and their relatives to health appointments in Ponta Grossa , located 60 kilometres away from the city. 

As a result of the deadly crash, 23  passengers, including 2 minors and the bus driver, have lost their lives while another 5 got injured. The death toll may rise as rescue operations progress. The injured passengers have been taken to nearby hospitals for immediate treatment.  Investigators are currently at the site to try & determine how the crash happened. 

Brazil Accident Today: Cause of the Accident

The exact cause of the bus-truck accident has not yet been established yet. However, Brazilian police have launched a forensic probe into the case. An official cause will likely be revealed once the  probe concludes. According to research, such accidents are generally caused by excessive speed, drunk drivers and the use of mobile phones while driving .

Brazil Accident Today: Who Were the Passengers? 

The passengers inside the minibus were local patients, healthcare workers, and accompanying family members travelling from Imbutva municipality to health centres in Ponta Grossa and Curitiba. It is not known how many passengers were on board the minibus. 

Brazil Accident Today: Local Authorities Response 

Brazilian emergency services launched a major rescue operation after the crash. The Federal Highway Police shared that out of the 23 casualties, most were passengers of the minibus (exceptions being the drivers of the minibus and the freight truck).  

Road operator Viu Aracuaria has completely blocked kilometre 209 of the BR-373 highway for over seven hours to allow forensic experts and the Federal Highway Police to examine the crash site. The municipal government of Imbituva declared two days of official mourning in response to the tragedy.

Brazilian police have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. All the dead bodies have been transported to the neighboring city of Ponta Grossa for immediate post-mortem evaluation & release for the family will take place. The Paraná Scientific Police has officially activated the international Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) protocol. The probe is still in its preliminary stages & cops will likely share more once some more details emerge.
