Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 80, formally announced his intention to run for re-election at a recent Workers’ Party meeting in Brasilia . If he wins, Lula would begin another term at 81 years old, potentially extending his political career and presidency well into his mid-80s.
At the PT gathering, the president acknowledged that some workers and lower-income voters have moved away from the party and said his campaign would seek to rebuild that connection. Lula also said that his electoral campaign will highlight the government’s economic growth, employment, income gains and social programmes.
