The Foreign Minister of the Russian Republic Sergey Lavrov on Friday, May 15 mentioned the role of individual BRICS nations, such as India, to play the role of peacemaker in the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

“The most important thing is to put an end to this… We discussed this during the ministerial Assembly. I don’t think BRICS should be the kind of organization to mediate, but individual BRICS members, especially those who are interested in ensuring there are no problems with navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. For example, India, the BRICS President are directly interested in receiving oil from this region… They could invite Iran and UAE to have a conversation with one another to agree on avoiding hostilities…”, mentioned the Russian Foreign Minister while addressing the media.

Previous calls for India to Act as Peacemaker

India has been viewed as a key mediator in US-Iran tensions by different nations due to its strategic, economic, and diplomatic relationships with both nations.

Following a major escalation, international observers urged India to play a key role in mediating, with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb highlighting India’s capability to bridge the gap between Washington and Tehran.

After Iran fired ballistic missiles at military bases hosting US forces in Iraq, Iran’s envoy to India Ali Chegeni sought India’s mediation in defusing tension, saying Iran wants peace not war, during the 2020 US-Iran conflict.

The 2026 BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is being held at the Bharat Mandapam convention centre in New Delhi, India, on May 14–15, 2026. Hosted under India’s 2026 chairship, the two-day summit brings together foreign ministers to discuss global issues, economic cooperation, and prepare for the 18th BRICS summit. One of the major topics of discussion at the meeting was the ongoing US-Iran conflict and the management of the Strait of Hormuz, which is the route for the majority of the world’s crude oil transportation.
