New York: US President Donald Trump has blamed Canada for allowing wildfire smoke to drift into the United States. He accused them of failing to manage their own forests and wildfires, which has led to poor air quality across several northern states, posing health problems and bringing economic losses. He claimed the associated costs should then be considered when imposing tariffs against Canadian exports, adding that the regularity of cross-border pollution had made it “unacceptable”.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous and totally unacceptable!” He further added, “This is Willful Negligence, and becoming a yearly occurrence, costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying.”

Trump is not the only U.S. leader criticising Canada’s handling of the wildfire crisis. Earlier this week, Republican representatives Jack Bergman, John James, Lisa McClain, and John Moolenaar sent a letter titled “Canada’s Apologies Won’t Clear Michigan’s Skies.” The lawmakers accused Canada of failing to act with enough urgency to reduce the impact of wildfire smoke. They claimed “nothing has changed except that our patience has run out.” Meanwhile, Michigan gubernatorial candidate John James issued what he called a “final warning to Canada,” saying “American lungs” are suffering because of Canadian “inaction.” He also wrote, “Sovereignty comes with responsibility, and the responsibility to prevent a foreseeable disaster from crossing into another country’s airspace has not been met.”
Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno also criticised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, saying Canada’s wildfire management showed “you don’t have to be very smart to get elected as a liberal, you just have to be woke.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford pushed back against the criticism from U.S. politicians, highlighting Canada’s past support during American natural disasters. “If there are some politicians out there chirping away, well, maybe what you should do rather than complain is send support, send help, because we have done the same thing for our American friends, and that’s what you’re supposed to do,” Ford said. The comments were made just days after 56-year-old Canadian pilot Nicholas Dale tragically lost his life as he helped to fight a wildfire in Colorado; that tragedy brought back to light the cross-border co-operation between Canada and the U.S. during wildfire emergencies.
How Serious Is Canada’s Wildfire Situation?
Canada continues to battle an intense wildfire season. According to the national wildfire summary, 43 new active fires were reported on Friday, bringing the total number of active wildfires across the country to 903. Of those, 122 are burning out of control, 29 are being held, and 73 are under control. Several communities in Ontario have been evacuated as fires continue to spread. Among those forced to leave was Diane Laybourne, who evacuated from Armstrong to Thunder Bay. She described the situation, saying, “It’s terrible. Having to go out in it, you just want to get in some place where the air is clean.”
