US President Donald Trump claimed China’s involvement in an alleged compromise of US voter data during the 2020 presidential election cycle, claiming that Beijing obtained information related to millions of American voters. However, China has rejected the allegations, saying it has never interfered in US presidential elections and that election outcomes are determined by American voters.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy denied the accusations and reiterated Beijing’s position that it follows the principle of non-interference in others internal affairs. The spokesperson said the US election is a domestic matter and that its results are decided by the votes of the American people. “The US election is an internal matter of the US. Its outcome is determined by the votes of the American people. China has never and will never interfere in the presidential elections of the US,” the statement said.
Trump Claims China Obtained US Voter Data
In a televised address, Trump alleged that China carried out what he described as a major election data compromise, claiming that the country obtained around 220 million US voter files. He said voter information from multiple states had allegedly been acquired through hacking, theft or other means.
“Tens of millions of voters’ data in 18 states have been bought, stolen, or hacked by China,” Trump claimed. Trump also announced the release of intelligence documents related to what he described as weaknesses in the US election infrastructure. He called on agencies, including the Department of Justice, FBI, CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, to investigate how the alleged information was handled.
No Evidence China Changed 2020 Election Results
Although Trump has expressed fears about the safety of voter data, there is no proven fact that China has interfered with the results of the 2020 US presidential election. The 2021 report from the US intelligence community has revealed that there was no sign that any foreign power had tampered with the technical side of the election, which includes voter registration systems, voting, vote counting, or the result reporting process.
It should be known that possession of voter registration data does not mean that elections were manipulated. Some voter registration data is publicly available or commercially obtainable in the US.
Political Debate Over Election Security Claims
Trump’s remarks have renewed debate over election security and foreign influence ahead of upcoming US midterm elections. Critics have questioned the basis of the allegations, while supporters have argued that stronger safeguards are needed to protect election infrastructure.
During his address, Trump said fair elections were essential for democracy and raised concerns about foreign threats to the electoral process. “No country can be great without fair and honest elections,” Trump said.
