Colombia Election 2026 Update: Colombia recently had its first round of the presidential elections last month. Now, US President Donald Trump has officially endorsed Abelardo ​de la Espriella, a right wing politician and one of the leading candidates to replace incumbent Gustavo Petro. 

About Colombia Presidential Election 2026

Colombia’s presidential election in 2026 features two main phases: the first one on 31st May, 2026 and the remaining one on 21st June, 2026. The first phase of the election had a voter turnout of 57.9%.   

In the previous presidential elections of Columbia in 2022, there was a run off between Gustavo Petro and Rodolfo Hernandez Suarez. Petro won and became the first left wing president of Colombia. The runoff happened because neither could claim a candidate in the initial round.

  • Abelardo ​de la Espriella, a right wing candidate from Bogota. 

  • Ivan Cepeda, a left wing leader from Bogota.

Results of Colombia Presidential Election: Round 1 

The first round of Colombia’s presidential elections happened on 31st May, 2026. During that round, 13 candidates went head to head. However, none of them were able to secure the 50% mark which is required for a victory. Hence, it was decided that a run off round would be held on 21st June, 2026.  

At the end, Abelardo ​de la Espriella from the right wing party of Defenders of the Homeland, won the highest votes at 43.74%. His running mate is Jose Manuel Restrepo Abondano, the former finance minister of  

When is the Second Round of Colombia Presidential Election? 

The next round of the Colombia Presidential Election will be held on  21st June, 2026. It will last from from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. local time.   

Colombia Presidential Election Controversy: Why Gustavo Petro Got Banned? 

Left wing leader and incumbent president Gustavo Petro was not allowed to contest the Colombia presidential elections in 2026. This is because in Colombia, only one term is allowed for the President, with no chances of re-election. Petro also faced allegations of corrpution during his tenure.
