DC Weather Today: D.C is witnessing yet another round of unsettled weather and intense heat, with thunderstorms threatening damaging winds, heavy rainfall, large hail and possible tornadoes. According to the weather department, a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 9 p.m.; meanwhile, some other areas have already received warnings. Meteorologists are also tracking the speed of the winds, and as a result, they are expecting a cold front to move through the region.

What Is the Latest DC Weather Update?

The D.C. area is experiencing hot and humid conditions along with scattered thunderstorms. Forecasters say the strongest storms could bring damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes, while the threat is expected to ease after sunset. Heavy rain and frequent lightning could still affect some areas overnight.

How Strong Could the Winds Get?

Damaging winds are expected to be one of the biggest threats from the storms. WTOP Meteorologist Mike Stinneford reported that a storm cell was producing wind gusts of nearly 70 mph along I-66 at around 4:18 p.m. Residents in affected areas should take warnings seriously and move indoors if severe storms approach.

How Much Rain Could Fall?

Some thunderstorms could produce extremely heavy rainfall in a short period. Stinneford warned that certain storm cells were producing rainfall rates of around 2 to 3 inches per hour, which could sharply reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions. Heavy rain may continue in pockets even after the main severe-weather threat decreases.

Is There a Tornado Risk?

Yes. Tornadoes remain among the potential threats from the strongest storms, along with large hail and damaging winds. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the D.C. region through 9 p.m., while some locations have already been placed under severe thunderstorm warnings. Residents should monitor official alerts and seek shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued.

What Is the DC Forecast for Labor Day Weekend?

Friday is expected to remain hot and muggy, with highs around 90 to 95 degrees and heat index values potentially reaching 97 to 103. Showers and storms should diminish Friday night, while Saturday turns cooler and less humid with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Sunday should be partly cloudy and pleasant, and Labor Day is expected to be partly cloudy with temperatures around 80 degrees.

What Safety Tips Should Residents Follow?

  • Stay indoors during severe thunderstorms.
  • Keep away from windows during strong winds and storms.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.
  • Slow down while driving during heavy rain.
  • Watch for reduced visibility and hazardous roads.
  • Follow official emergency alerts and instructions.
  • Keep your phone charged to receive weather warnings.
  • Avoid flooded roads, fallen trees and downed power lines.
