Donald Trump Latest News Today: What does it say about a diplomatic relationship when a world leader wants to make an unscheduled phone call at dawn? US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor answered that question on Monday by sharing a behind-the-scenes story involving US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit in Washington, Gor revealed that Trump wanted to call PM Modi while the two were backstage at a UFC event in Miami earlier this year—even after being told it was 6 AM in India.
The anecdote, according to the envoy, reflected the personal rapport between the two leaders and underscored the strength of the broader India-US relationship.
Donald Trump Latest News Today: Trump Wanted to Call PM Modi at 6 AM
Recalling the incident, Sergio Gor said Trump unexpectedly suggested calling the Indian Prime Minister while they were backstage at the UFC event in Miami.
According to Gor, he reminded the President about the time difference and said, “He said to me: Let’s call the Prime Minister. I said: It’s 6 am in the morning there. He replied: He (Modi) will be up, he’s like me, he doesn’t sleep.”
Since Trump had to go on stage shortly afterwards, the call was eventually scheduled for the following day.

Gor said the story was not about the timing of the call but about the friendship between Trump and Modi.
He explained, “The louder message of the story is when you’re friends with somebody, not everything needs to be scheduled.”
The ambassador added that Trump genuinely considers PM Modi a friend and shares a level of personal comfort with him that he does not necessarily have with every world leader.

Besides highlighting the personal equation between the two leaders, Gor also provided an update on the proposed India-US trade agreement.
He said negotiations have entered the “last one per cent” and expressed confidence that the agreement would be concluded soon. Gor noted that while the talks have continued for nearly 18 months, major international trade agreements often take much longer to finalise, citing the European trade deal as an example.
Donald Trump Latest News Today: India-US Partnership Remains Strong
Addressing speculation about bilateral ties, Gor dismissed suggestions that relations had weakened. He pointed to continued cooperation in defence, trade, technology and people-to-people exchanges, saying the partnership remains on a strong footing.
He also emphasised that the next two years would play a crucial role in shaping the long-term future of India-US relations, with both countries aiming to expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
