Donald Trump Latest News: US Tightens Sanctions on Iran

Treasury Department of the United States has blacklisted Ali Ansari, a financial facilitator from Iran, along with some exchange houses involved in moving billions of dollars for Iranian banks blacklisted by the US. As per reports of US authorities, these financial conduits provide funding for the political and military system of Iran. Sanctions come against the backdrop of military tension and withdrawal of sanctions exemption for Iranian oil sales.

According to the US Treasury, the sanctions include Ali Ansari, an Iranian financial facilitator described as “running a large-scale worldwide network of assets which benefits the leadership of Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and his associates.” The sanctions will also affect exchange houses in Iran which have been involved in the transfer of billions of dollars yearly for the Iranian sanctioned banks.

Donald Trump Latest News: Hormuz Attacks Raise Global Concerns

The Strait of Hormuz is still one of the busiest energy channels, which carries up to 20% of the total global oil demand of approximately 20 million barrels per day. Disruption of the channel would lead to the rise of energy prices, transport costs and insurance premiums while the recent incidents of attacks on merchant ships have brought back to light the importance of the strategic channel.

Donald Trump Latest News: Diplomacy Continues Despite Rising Tensions

Despite the fact that US President Trump considers the previous agreement between Iran and the USA as being basically obsolete, both parties are still giving way for negotiations. There is a noticeable increase in efforts from the side of Qatar and Pakistan regarding mediation, as well as involvement of the Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian into talks with other regional authorities.

Donald Trump Latest News: What Do the New US Sanctions on Iran Include Expected?

According to the US Treasury Department’s announcement, the new sanctions include:

  • Ali Ansari Sanctioned: The US has sanctioned an Iranian financial facilitator by name Ali Ansari, claiming he operates a worldwide financial network connected to Iran’s leadership.

  • Financial Network Sanctioned: The sanction targets companies and financial networks that are claimed to have provided benefits to Mojtaba Khamenei along with other top Iranian officials.

  • Iranian Exchange Houses Sanctioned: A number of Iranian exchange houses are sanctioned due to their alleged involvement in laundering billions of dollars each year on behalf of sanctioned Iranian banks.

  • Asset Freeze: All the assets held by sanctioned individuals and organizations in US jurisdiction will be frozen.

  • US Business Restrictions: US businesses cannot conduct any business with sanctioned individuals and organizations.

  • Secondary Sanctions Risk: Foreign organizations dealing with sanctioned entities may face sanctions or restrictions imposed by the US.

These measures are intended to further limit Iran’s access to the international financial system following the attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Donald Trump Latest News: Can Fresh Sanctions Bring Lasting Stability?

Economic Sanctions still figure among the key elements of US foreign policy, but the history of their use proves that sanctions do not lead to a rapid change of the political situation while on the contrary, the use of sanctions increases regional instability and impacts international trade and the energy market. Future stability in the region will not be ensured by sanctions alone but will require effective diplomacy and security assurances. Given the present tension in the region, the next few weeks can be crucial.
