Trump China Visit: US First Lady Melania Trump did not accompany US President Donald Trump during his high-profile diplomatic visit to China, drawing widespread attention as Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping for crucial bilateral discussions in Beijing.
While many expected Melania Trump to join the official American delegation, especially after attending Trump’s 2017 China visit, reports revealed that the First Lady chose to remain in Washington DC to continue work linked to child welfare and foster care initiatives in the United States.
The absence became a major talking point during the summit, which focused on trade, economic cooperation, and energy deals between the world’s two largest economies.
Why Melania Trump Didn’t Join POTUS in China Visit?
According to reports from the New York Post and NBC News, Melania Trump stayed back to mark 180 days since President Trump signed the “Fostering the Future” Executive Order, a programme closely connected to her long-running efforts supporting children in foster care.
The initiative aligns with her “Be Best” campaign, which has consistently focused on children’s well-being, online safety, and family support programmes across the country. “The first lady has prioritised America’s families and children in her initiatives here at home and is focused on these responsibilities at present,” a source told the New York Post.
Sources familiar with the matter also stated that Melania was expected to remain in Washington even before the China trip was temporarily delayed due to tensions surrounding the US-Iran situation.
Trump Travels With Business Leaders Instead
Unlike previous foreign visits that included the First Lady, President Trump travelled to China alongside senior White House officials and several prominent American business executives.
Reports also suggested that Hollywood producer and businessman Brett Ratner was part of the delegation. The New York Post cited a source claiming Melania Trump was unaware in advance that Ratner would join the official group travelling to China.
The White House has not publicly commented on that aspect of the reports.
Trump and Xi Jinping Hold High-Stakes Talks
President Trump and Xi Jinping met on Friday at Zhongnanhai, the heavily guarded leadership compound of the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing. The summit focused on strengthening trade ties, economic cooperation, and energy agreements between Washington and Beijing amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Trump later said China had agreed to purchase oil from the United States, describing it as a significant outcome from the talks. The meeting marked another major diplomatic engagement between the two leaders as both nations seek stability in trade relations and strategic cooperation.
Why Melania’s Absence Sparked Attention in China Visit?
Melania Trump’s decision not to travel became notable because presidential spouses traditionally attend major state visits and diplomatic meetings, particularly those involving strategic global partners like China.
Her absence also stood out because she had joined Trump during his earlier China visit in 2017, where the couple participated in multiple ceremonial events alongside Xi Jinping and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan.
However, people close to the First Lady indicated that her current priority remains domestic initiatives centred around foster care, children, and family welfare programmes in the US.
Another source quoted by the Washington Post said Melania Trump was never expected to attend the China visit, even before the trip was postponed amid tensions linked to the US-Iran conflict.
