Three high school golf team participants in the US state of Virginia demonstrated extraordinary bravery when a routine afternoon tryout abruptly transformed into a dramatic rescue operation on Culpeper Lake. Andrew Tuggle, 15, along with 17-year-olds Jackson Castro and Gavin Cain, were competing for places on the Eastern View High School golf team at the Culpeper Country Club when emergency cries broke the afternoon silence.
Local police and media reports confirmed that the quick-thinking teenagers leapt into action to save a family of three whose kayaks had flipped over in deep water.
How Did the Dangerous Situation Unfold on the Water?
The dramatic events began near the second hole of the golf course when the students heard distress calls and a young child screaming. Realising a family comprising two adults and a three-year-old boy was struggling beneath the surface, the teenagers did not hesitate. Jackson Castro recalled hearing the initial splashing and frantic cries for help, noting that one of the adults was valiantly attempting to keep the toddler above water while repeatedly dipping beneath the surface themselves.
While their teammates promptly contacted emergency services and alerted coaching staff, Tuggle, Cain, and Castro dropped their equipment, sprinted down a steep, boulder-strewn shoreline lined with thorny bushes, and plunged into the lake.

The trio successfully swam out to the struggling family, bringing all three individuals safely back to shore just moments before professional first responders arrived. Local law enforcement officials praised the teenagers for their swift intervention and selflessness. Culpeper police Chief Christopher Settle commended the youths, stating that their actions directly prevented a tragedy.
“These three young men saw someone in danger and acted immediately, without hesitation, at potentially great personal risk to themselves,” Chief Settle remarked. School golf coach Patrick Thornhill similarly lauded the players, expressing immense pride in their character and decisive leadership. After ensuring everyone was safe and even retrieving the capsized boats, the resilient teens returned to the course to complete their tryouts, successfully earning their coveted places on the varsity squad.
