A man in his mid-to-late 20s lost his life after an e-scooter collided with a sedan outside Dufferin Mall in Toronto’s west end on Friday morning.
According to Toronto police, the crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. near the intersection of Dufferin Street and Bloor Street West. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a serious collision involving an e-scooter and a passenger vehicle.
Paramedics transported the scooter rider to hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, police later confirmed that he died from his injuries. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.

Traffic Services Inspector Dan Pravica said the e-scooter rider was travelling southbound on Dufferin Street when a northbound sedan attempted to make a left turn into the entrance of Dufferin Mall.
The turning vehicle struck the scooter rider, leading to the fatal collision. The sedan driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police have not announced whether any charges will be filed as the investigation remains active.

Inspector Pravica also thanked members of the public who immediately came forward to help the injured rider before emergency crews arrived.
“We have seen an increase both in the accidents, but also in the enforcement aspect,” Pravica said, noting officers issued roughly 600 tickets related to e-scooters and e-bikes in 2024, with that number nearly doubling last year.
“Regardless of who’s right or wrong or at fault, the pedestrian or the cyclist or e-scooter rider is going to take the biggest brunt of the injury,” he said.
