The England Local Election 2026 is taking place today, on May 07, 2026. The polling of votes begins from 7:00 to 22:00 BST.

England Local Election 2026: What to Carry at the Polling Station

Before you cast your vote, you need to be registered to vote. Here’s the list of the essential things you must carry to the polling station while casting your vote in England:

  • Passports

  • Driving licences

  • Older or Disabled Person’s bus passes

  • Oyster 60+ cards

  • Armed Forces Veteran Cards

If you don’t have up-to-date photo ID, you can use the out-of-date one, as long as you look the same.

England Local Election 2026: How to Cast Vote?

In some areas, you might get several ballot papers for different elections, such as voting for your council and mayor.

If you get stuck somewhere or are confused about anything, there will be staff at the polling stations who are there to help. 

They will give you your ballot papers, mark the registers, and make sure you know what to do, and guide you on how to cast a vote.

If you realise at the last minute that you will not be able to vote in person, you can also ask someone else to cast your vote on your behalf, as a proxy, but before 17:00 BST on the polling day.

In England, voters will be picking around 5,000 councillors across 136 local authorities, as well as 6 mayors.

In the England Local Elections 2026, voting is conducted using physical ballot papers. The primary system used across local council and mayoral elections in England is First-Past-The-Post (FPTP).

The Polling Stations will close at 22:00 BST, with the first results expected to come in overnight. The official announcement of the vote will be made on Friday morning, May 08, 2026 and Saturday evening, May 09, 2026.
