The single-seat F-16V Block 20 aircraft was flying a scheduled night training mission when air traffic controllers lost contact at 7:29 pm local time. The jet vanished roughly 10 nautical miles east of Fengbin Township in Hualien County, an area known for strong winds and rough seas, especially at night.
The pilot, identified only as Captain Hsin, had taken off from Hualien Air Base earlier in the evening. Authorities have not confirmed whether he successfully ejected from the aircraft or managed to send out a distress signal.
