US-Israel-Iran War Update: The Instagram page belonging to the White House during the Obama administration was recently made controversial because some unauthorized posts were published on the page while it was even speculated that there could be a potential cyber attack on the page because of the posts. Screenshots of the content published included the images of an Iranian general named Qasem Soleimani, with provocative political messages written but despite the posts’ shock value, there is no evidence as to the source of the cyber attack.

The social media account, which had been relatively dormant ever since January 2017 after the change in presidential administrations, posted a photo, which seemed unconnected with the account’s initial objective. One such post included an AI-designed photo with the caption stating that the White House is under the rule of Shiites.
Such content went viral quickly online, prompting thousands of responses in just a few hours while later reports showed that the account had actually fallen victim to hackers. The relative dormancy of the account during almost a decade would have certainly raised eyebrows among the public.

What Do We Know About the Hack?
It is reported that the parent company of Instagram known as Meta confirmed that there had been an illegal breach into their account. It has further been stated that their account was secured after the attack and the content was removed while what needs to be highlighted here is that there hasn’t been any disclosure from Meta as far as the country, group or person involved in the act of hacking is concerned.
Is There Evidence Linking the Hack to Iran?
Despite all the allegations made on social media, there is nothing to confirm whether the attack was conducted by Iran itself or by any other Iranian hacktivist group and the reason for such assumptions was the presence of materials about Soleimani in the network however, attribution in cyber-attacks is a lot more complicated than that. According to the estimates of the cybersecurity industry, not even 30 percent of cyber incidents get confirmed public attribution.
A Pattern of High-Profile Account Breaches
The attack also sparked recollections of previous incidents where prominent individuals have been targeted while in 2020, some confirmed Twitter accounts of known personalities, ranging from political figures to businessmen, were hacked in what was referred to as a cryptocurrency scam.
The federal government conducted an investigation into this incident, showing that even prominent accounts are not safe from social engineering and password theft around the world, cyber crimes cause more than $10 trillion dollars per year, illustrating the complexity and increasing nature of the threat landscape.
Fact Check: Was the Obama White House Instagram Account Really Hacked by Iran?
There is no credible evidence to suggest that Iran was responsible for hacking the Instagram account of the Obama White House while Meta revealed that the account was indeed compromised and then secured, there have been no reports released by the authorities confirming Iran’s responsibility. The account was still active and had about 2.4 million subscribers.
