Flamingo Air Plane Crash: A tragic plane crash in the Bahamas claimed the lives of all 10 people aboard a Flamingo Air aircraft on Friday. The accident occurred in North Andros, just hours after another plane operated by the same airline caught fire following an emergency return to Nassau, raising fresh concerns over the carrier’s safety.

Videos shared on social media showed the wreckage of the Cessna 402C aircraft scattered across a wooded area in North Andros, west of Nassau. The crash happened while Independence Day celebrations were taking place in the area.

How Did the Flamingo Air Plane Crash Happen?

According to preliminary findings released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA), the aircraft departed from Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau on a scheduled flight to San Andros. The plane crashed shortly after 1 p.m.

Investigators said the aircraft reportedly developed problems while in flight before going down. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Did Anyone Survive the Bahamas Plane Crash?

Police Commissioner Shanta Knowles said one person was initially found alive after the crash but later died from injuries sustained in the accident. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims. Authorities said the passenger list will only be made public after the families of those on board have been informed.

“We owe that to families and the integrity of the investigation,” added Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis. Expressing his condolences, the Prime Minister said, “We have mourned too many lives, we have comforted too many families, and today we mourn once again,” added Davis, as he asked God to give the country strength in the days ahead.

Bahamas Suspends Flamingo Air Flights After Two Safety Incidents

Following the deadly crash, the Bahamian government temporarily suspended all Flamingo Air operations as a precaution. The Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Aviation said the decision was taken after two separate safety incidents involving the airline occurred on Friday. Earlier the same day, another Flamingo Air aircraft was forced to return to Nassau after the pilot reported technical issues. After landing, the plane caught fire, but all passengers were safely evacuated without injuries.

Flamingo Air Safety Record and Previous Incidents

Flamingo Air is a Bahamas-based regional airline that operates a fleet of nine aircraft and serves 13 destinations across the country. Before Friday’s tragedy, the airline had been involved in eight accidents since 2012. However, none of those incidents had resulted in fatalities. In October 2023, the boarding door of one of the airline’s Beech 99 aircraft opened during a flight to Staniel Cay. In another incident in August 2016, a Beech 99 aircraft made a crash landing at South Bimini Airport after the wheel beneath its right wing collapsed. All passengers escaped safely in both cases.

Flamingo Air Responds to North Andros Plane Crash

Flamingo Air said it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation and extended condolences to the families of the victims. “We can confirm that an aircraft owned by Flamingo Air experienced a fatal crash in the North Andros, Bahamas, area today,” the company said in a statement.
