Flydubai FZ1073 Attack: The UAE Attorney General has described the alleged attack by Flydubai co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami on Captain Smit Machchhar as a “terrorist act”, as an investigation continues into the incident and the circumstances surrounding it. The co-pilot allegedly attacked the Indian captain with an emergency axe during the flight to Israel. The incident triggered a dangerous situation inside the cockpit, with the aircraft reportedly making a sharp descent before the crew and passengers managed to bring the situation under control.

UAE diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash praised Machchhar for confronting what he described as a “serious terrorist act”. He said the Indian pilot “deserves every bit of appreciation” for showing courage and responsibility while dealing with a situation that could potentially have resulted in a major disaster. Gargash also described the incident as a “dangerous terrorist act” and praised the captain’s response. In a post on X, he said Machchhar’s “professionalism and moral sense in the darkest of circumstances make him a true hero.”

At the same time, Gargash cautioned against drawing premature conclusions or spreading conspiracy theories while the investigation remains underway. He stressed the importance of vigilance in addressing the risks associated with extremism and terrorism, Arab News reported.

Flydubai FZ1073 Attack: What Happened Inside the Cockpit?

The flight was carrying 182 people when the alleged attack took place. The co-pilot is accused of attacking Captain Machchhar with an emergency axe while the aircraft was flying towards Israel. The captain was seriously injured but managed to use his remaining strength to unlock the cockpit door during the confrontation. People who heard unusual sounds from the flight deck then entered the cockpit and helped restrain the co-pilot. The crew and others on board subsequently helped stabilise the aircraft. The flight was later diverted and made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The sudden descent during the incident has become an important part of the investigation, as authorities examine how the confrontation affected the aircraft and how close the plane came to a potentially serious accident.

Flydubai Co-Pilot Hamam al-Hammami: What We Know

The co-pilot suspected of attacking the captain has been identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami. The Associated Press reported that al-Hammami had previously been barred from flying in Oman because of concerns that he had adopted extremist views. He was later employed by UAE-based Flydubai. However, it was not immediately clear how extensive the vetting process was before he was hired. Investigators are now examining how he came to be working in the cockpit despite the earlier concerns. His previous history, employment by Flydubai and the events leading up to the alleged attack are expected to form part of the wider investigation.

Flydubai FZ1073 Investigation: UAE Leads Multinational Probe

The UAE is leading the investigation into the incident, with authorities from several countries involved in the probe. Both the captain and co-pilot were later taken to the UAE. Israel and Oman do not have formal diplomatic relations. AP also reported that Israel has long-standing arrangements with foreign airlines concerning pilots who are citizens of countries that do not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel.

Officials have said that Israel and several other countries are participating in the investigation. Authorities are examining the alleged cockpit attack, the aircraft’s sharp descent, the co-pilot’s previous history and the circumstances surrounding his employment. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to determine the full circumstances and motive behind the incident as the probe progresses.
