Gann Fire Update: Crews Managing Wildfire in California’s Calaveras County Make ‘Steady Progress’
According to local authorities, the firefighting crews who were trying to manage the rapid wildfire in Calaveras County’s Gann have made ‘steady progress’. The wildfire is currently at 66% containment and 1 casualty has been confirmed.
Evacaution orders have also been lifted but authorities have advised residents to exercise caution with regards to any potential hazards. “Being allowed to re-enter and determining whether a fire-damaged property is safe are two different things,” Lisa Medina, the Calaveras County Environmental Health Director, said in a statement. “Until assessments are done, we are asking residents to avoid distributing ash and debris and to take these hazards seriously.”

On August 3, 2026, a massive laze erupted at 5:37 PM local time near Hogan Dam Road and Gann Road, close to the New Hogan Lake in Valley Springs, Calaveras County, California. It then spread rapidly and burned through 10,374 acres of land.
Gann Fire Update: Cause of Wildfire
An official cause of the Gann wildfire has not been publicly disclosed. However, it is most likely arson.Authorities from CAL Fire previously arrested Herbert Wayne Smith, a 65-year-old local resident, in connection with the blaze. He later posted bond and claimed that it was entirely accidental.
