Greenwich Power Outage Today:A widespread power outage plunged much of Greenwich, Connecticut, into darkness on Sunday, disrupting daily life for residents, businesses and commuters. What began as a storm-related incident quickly escalated into one of the town’s most significant recent electricity disruptions with traffic signals disabled, commercial activity interrupted and thousands of households left without power, the outage exposed how vulnerable modern communities remain when critical infrastructure unexpectedly fails.

Greenwich Power Outage: When Did the Blackout Begin & What Triggered It?

The outage intensified shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday after utility crews encountered complications while addressing storm-related damage. According to information released by Eversource, an unusually large American flag became entangled in a transmission structure located in Stamford during severe weather overnight.

The initial incident caused approximately 5,000 outages in Stamford, although around 3,000 customers had their electricity restored relatively quickly however, while crews were attempting to remove the flag from the transmission equipment, the material reportedly came into contact with a second electrical circuit and triggering a much larger outage that affected both Stamford and Greenwich.

Greenwich Power Outage: Which Areas Affected Neighbourhood

The disruption was most severe in Greenwich, where nearly the entire customer base experienced service interruptions while Eversource reported that 28,097 customers in Greenwich lost power, representing approximately 98.9% of all customers served in the town. In neighboring Stamford, 12,884 customers were affected, accounting for about 19.72% of the city’s customer base.

Residential neighborhoods, shopping districts, office locations and public infrastructure across Greenwich experienced varying degrees of disruption throughout the afternoon while local authorities confirmed that numerous traffic signals stopped functioning, creating additional challenges for motorists traveling through affected intersections.

The outage impacted a large portion of Greenwich, including several major residential and commercial areas:

  • Downtown Greenwich
  • Cos Cob
  • Riverside
  • Old Greenwich
  • Glenville
  • Byram
  • Pemberwick
  • Belle Haven
  • Greenwich Point Area
  • Central Greenwich Residential Districts

Greenwich Power Outage: What Caused the Widespread Blackout?

Unlike many outages caused directly by fallen trees or damaged power lines, this event stemmed from an unusual chain of circumstances. Overnight storms generated strong winds that carried a large American flag into a high-voltage transmission structure while utility crews worked to remove the obstruction, contact with a secondary circuit triggered a broader electrical failure. The incident highlights how even uncommon objects can create significant consequences when they interfere with critical transmission infrastructure.

Greenwich Power Outage: When Will Power Be Restored?

At the time of reporting, Eversource stated that restoration efforts were actively underway while utility officials indicated that electricity would gradually return as crews completed repairs and safely re-energized affected circuits because transmission-level outages impact large portions of the grid, restoration typically occurs in phases rather than all at once. Residents were advised to monitor official utility channels for real-time updates regarding service restoration.

Greenwich Power Outage: Economic Impact on Local Businesses

The outage created immediate economic challenges for local businesses while restaurants faced food preservation concerns, retailers experienced interrupted transactions and professional offices struggled with connectivity issues.

Businesses dependent on digital payment systems were particularly affected, as many could not process customer purchases during the outage. For service-sector companies, every hour without electricity translated into lost productivity and reduced revenue opportunities while the broader impact extended beyond direct financial losses, as traffic disruptions and limited accessibility discouraged customer visits throughout the day.
