H5N1 Virus Outbreak: Australia has been facing the outbreak of the deadly H5N1 virus for some time. Now, the country’s agriculture minister, Julie Collins, stated that not much can be done to limit the spread.

Julie Collins, the agriculture minister of Australia spoke about the ongoing H5 bird flu outbreak in Australia. “We’re doing everything we can do as a government, but we cannot stop the spread of this virus, she said in an interview.
Collins then added that So we’ve certainly been doing everything we can do with industry there to make sure that we’re as prepared as we can be, and I know states and territories are also working very closely with industry on the ground, and we have seen some housing orders, which is where we ask free-range chicken producers, egg producers, to bring their chickens inside.” She also stated that despite the Australian government’s best efforts, “We will continue to see mass mortalities, particularly of birds,” Over 250 cases of the virus have been detected so far in Australia.
H5N1 Virus Outbreak: Symptoms
The common symptoms of H5N1 virus include:

Neurological Signs: Tremors, twisted necks (torticollis), loss of balance, and circling.

Physical Distress: Severe breathing difficulties, coughing, and sneezing.

Swelling & Discolouration: Deep blue or purple discolouration of the comb, wattles, and legs, alongside severe swelling of the head and eyes.

Digestive Issues: Profuse, watery green or yellow diarrhoea.

Production Drop: A sudden, drastic drop in egg production or the laying of soft-shelled eggs.
H5N1 Virus Outbreak: Treatment
Currently, there is no available treatment for cases of H5N1 virus among birds. However, in human cases, the disease can be easily treated with antiviral medicines like Oseltamivir (Tamiflu), and Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza).

South Australia, with 139+ cases, is the epicentre of the ongoing outbreak. Victoria, with close to 75 cases, is the second most affected province. Isolated cases have also been detected in Tasmania & Queensland. It is highly likely that the number of cases will rise as more tests are conducted.
