More than 35 H-E-B and Mi Tienda prepared food products have been pulled from shelves after being linked to a spreading multistate Salmonella outbreak tied to imported jalapeño peppers, the Texas-based grocery chain confirmed. The recall spans several varieties of H-E-B Pico de Gallo, Jalapeño Popper Stuffed Mushrooms and diced jalapenos, alongside a wider range of in-store prepared items including certain guacamole varieties, ceviche, shrimp cocktail, pimento cheese spreads, Mexican street corn, sandwiches and snack trays.
“The affected products were distributed to retail customers in Texas and Louisiana between July 3, 2026, and August 5, 2026,” H-E-B said in a statement, adding that “all products currently available at H-E-B are safe and not impacted by the recall.”
Heb Salmonella Jalapeno Recall: Who Triggered The Recall And Why?
The recall traces back to NatureBest Precut & Produce LLC, which operates facilities in Houston and Missouri City, Texas, and voluntarily pulled its jalapeno-containing products on 14th August after being alerted by its supplier. “This recall was initiated after NatureBest was notified by Coast Citrus Distributors that certain jalapeño peppers supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors were subject to a recall,” the company said in a notice published through H-E-B’s newsroom. NatureBest said it had “ceased distribution of the affected products and is working in cooperation with its supplier and regulatory authorities regarding this recall.”

The recall forms part of a larger investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Javiana infections linked to jalapeno peppers grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. “The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Javiana infections linked to jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors,” the notice said, adding that products made using the affected peppers “may therefore be impacted.”
According to the FDA’s outbreak tracking page, the contamination has already triggered a cascade of downstream recalls beyond H-E-B, including a separate recall by Whole Foods Market on 12th August covering salsa, guacamole and pico de gallo sold across twelve US states, as well as an earlier recall by California-based Taylor Farms affecting products sold at Target, Walmart and Whole Foods.
Heb Salmonella Jalapeno Recall: How Dangerous Is The Contamination?
Health officials have warned that salmonella infections can pose serious risks, particularly to vulnerable groups. “Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” NatureBest said in its recall notice, adding that otherwise healthy individuals infected with the bacteria typically experience fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
A separate but related recall was also issued by Houston-based Salata Dressings for its Jalapeno Avocado Dressing, which was sold in Texas H-E-B stores between 13th July and 5th August, according to a notice filed with the FDA.
Heb Salmonella Jalapeno Recall: What Should Shoppers Do Now?
Consumers who purchased any of the affected products have been advised not to consume them, and to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Customers with questions have been directed to contact NatureBest directly on weekdays between 8am and 5pm central time, while H-E-B has set up a dedicated customer support line for queries related to the recall.
With the FDA’s investigation still ongoing and downstream recalls continuing to emerge more than a week after the initial alert, health officials have not yet said how many illnesses have been confirmed nationally, nor when the outbreak is expected to be brought fully under control.
