Hurricane LaLa Update: Hawaii Governor Josh Green and state emergency officials have issued an urgent status update as Category 1 Hurricane LaLa continues to impact the state. Widespread power outages have left over 44,000 customers without electricity across Hawaii Island, Maui, and Oahu, prompting the activation of the Hawaii National Guard and the opening of emergency shelters statewide.

Hurricane LaLa Update: Current Weather Warnings

Hurricane LaLa Update: Statewide Impacts & Closures

  • Power Outages: Widespread disruptions with high winds snapping trees and utility poles. Utility crews are executing fallbacks where local conditions are too hazardous to work safely.

  • Airports & Transit: Big Island airports are closed, and dozens of inter-island and transpacific flights have been canceled.

  • Ports & Harbors: The U.S. Coast Guard has closed all commercial ports across the islands.

  • Road Conditions: Massive road closures due to downed trees, active mudslides, and flooded roadways.

Hurricane LaLa Update: Active Safety Advisories

  • Shelter in Place: Residents safe at home are ordered to stay indoors and avoid all unnecessary travel.

  • Water Conservation: The Board of Water Supply has requested that Oahu residents immediately conserve water.

  • Brown Water Advisory: Issued for Hawaii Island. Contaminated, murky runoff presents dangerous bacteria levels. Stay out of coastal waters for 48 to 72 hours after storms subside.

  • Emergency Refuge: If your residence is compromised, proceed carefully to your county’s designated evacuation shelters. Bring emergency food, medical supplies, and basic family essentials.

Hurricane LaLa Update: Grid & Infrastructure Failure

  • Grid Collapse: On the Hamakua Coast, falling trees severed a critical 42-mile span of transmission lines, snapping multiple high-voltage utility poles.

  • Hospitals: Three local hospitals completely lost municipal power but successfully shifted operations to emergency backup generators to maintain patient care.

  • Port Lockdowns: The U.S. Coast Guard has officially halted all commercial maritime traffic by closing all commercial ports in Hawaii Island, Maui County, and Kauai.

Hurricane LaLa Update: Direct Island Conditions & Travel

  • Oahu: Strong rainbands are impacting the island, prompting severe warnings for high winds, flash floods, and localized 2-foot storm surges along vulnerable coastal sectors.

  • Airports: Hilo International Airport (ITO) and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA) remain completely closed. Over 190 flights have been officially canceled or postponed.

  • Parks & Closures: Major cultural sites including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, and Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park are closed until further notice.

Residents must remain indoors as dangerous conditions continue into the night.
