India–Vietnam UPI Link Announced: In a significant move to deepen financial and technological cooperation, India and Vietnam have announced plans to link their digital payment systems. The decision came after high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese President To Lam during his official visit to India.

UPI to Connect with Vietnam’s Fast Payment System

The proposed integration between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Vietnam’s fast payment network is expected to simplify transactions for tourists, businesses, and investors operating between the two countries.

Following their discussions, both nations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the financial sector. The initiative focuses on improving real-time payment connectivity and strengthening ties between their respective central banks.

“India’s UPI and Vietnam’s fast payment system are going to be linked soon,” PM Modi said after the meeting.

This development signals a major step toward seamless cross-border digital payments, especially in Southeast Asia, where India has been expanding its fintech footprint.

How the UPI Link with Vietnam’s Fast Payment System will Work?

While the full integration is still in process, early groundwork has already begun. Some fintech platforms in Vietnam have started enabling QR-based UPI payments for Indian travellers in select locations such as Da Nang.

The project is being supported by NPCI International Payments Limited, which has been actively forming partnerships across Asia. Its existing collaboration with Liquid Group is already facilitating QR-based payments in several countries, including Vietnam.

Once fully operational, users from both countries will be able to make quick payments using mobile apps without needing currency exchange or international cards.

UPI in Vietnam: How It Will Benefit You?

The planned UPI link between India and Vietnam will make everyday payments much simpler for users. If you travel to Vietnam, you will be able to pay directly through UPI apps without carrying cash or worrying about currency exchange.

Businesses and freelancers will also find it easier to receive and send payments across borders in real time. The system will likely reduce transaction costs, improve speed, and increase convenience, especially for small merchants and tourists.

Overall, this move will bring smoother, faster, and more secure digital transactions for millions of users in both countries.

UPI in Vietnam: Strategic Partnership Goes Beyond Payments

The announcement came alongside a broader upgrade in bilateral ties. India and Vietnam elevated their relationship to an “enhanced comprehensive strategic partnership,” reflecting deeper cooperation across multiple sectors.

“Vietnam is a key pillar of India’s Act East Policy and Vision Ocean. In the Indo-Pacific region as well, we share a common outlook,” Modi said. “Through our strengthening defence and security cooperation, we will continue to contribute to the rule of law, peace, stability, and prosperity,” he said.

President To Lam also highlighted the importance of expanding security and political trust between the two nations.

India-Vietnam Ties: Focus on Defence and Indo-Pacific Stability

Apart from fintech collaboration, both sides discussed strengthening defence ties, including maritime cooperation and regional security. The Indo-Pacific region remained a key focus, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to maintaining stability and rule-based order.

“To boost financial connectivity, we decided to enhance cooperation between the central banks of the two countries,” Modi said. India also reiterated its intention to expand engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with Vietnam playing a central role.

Apart from the UPI, here are the key MoUs and understandings from the India–Vietnam talks:

  • UPI–Vietnam Payment Link MoU: India and Vietnam will connect UPI with Vietnam’s system to make digital payments easier for users.
  • Strategic Partnership Upgrade: Both countries have raised their relationship to a higher level for stronger overall cooperation.
  • Defence Cooperation Agreements: India and Vietnam will work more closely on defence, including rescue operations and military industry ties.
  • Fintech Collaboration: Both sides will expand digital payment systems like QR-based transactions across borders.
  • Central Bank Cooperation: The two countries will increase coordination between their central banks to improve their financial systems.

India-Vietnam Ties: Why This Move Matters?

The UPI linkage is expected to:

  • Make travel easier for Indian tourists in Vietnam
  • Boost trade and business transactions
  • Strengthen India’s digital payment influence globally
  • Deepen economic ties between the two fast-growing economies

The India-Vietnam UPI integration marks a practical and forward-looking step in bilateral relations. By combining digital innovation with strategic cooperation, both countries are setting the stage for stronger economic and regional partnerships in the years ahead.
