A cargo vessel heading toward India became the latest casualty of rising tensions in the Gulf region after it was struck by a projectile while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. The attack caused a fire onboard the ship and forced crew members to abandon the vessel in the strategic maritime corridor used by global shipping and energy companies.

The incident highlights growing risks to commercial shipping routes as the conflict involving Iran and the United States spreads across the region. Authorities quickly launched rescue operations after the attack, while maritime agencies issued warnings to vessels operating in the area.

The cargo ship identified as Mayuree Naree, a Thai-registered bulk carrier, was sailing through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday when it was hit by a projectile. The vessel was on its way to Kandla Port in Gujarat, India, after departing from Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates.

The impact caused a fire onboard the vessel, sending thick smoke into the air. The ship’s crew quickly activated emergency procedures and evacuated the vessel using life rafts. The Mayuree Naree is a large bulk carrier measuring about 178 metres in length and capable of carrying approximately 30,000 tonnes of cargo.

It is operated by the Thai shipping company Precious Shipping. Photographs released by maritime authorities showed smoke rising from parts of the vessel after the strike, indicating significant damage to the ship’s structure.

Iran-Israel War: Crew Rescue Operation After Cargo Ship Fire

Emergency response teams began rescue operations soon after the attack was reported. The Omani navy dispatched vessels and personnel to assist the crew members who had abandoned the burning ship.

Officials confirmed that 20 sailors were rescued from the water, while search teams continued efforts to locate three crew members who were initially reported missing. Rescue teams managed to bring the fire under control later, although authorities have not yet confirmed the full extent of the damage to the vessel.

“The specific details and cause of the attack are currently under investigation,” the Thai navy said in a statement. Authorities are now examining whether the projectile was linked to the ongoing regional conflict or other maritime security threats.

Maritime monitoring agencies reported that the vessel was hit approximately 11 nautical miles north of Oman while it was sailing through the narrow shipping corridor.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also issued an alert earlier, saying a ship in the region had been struck by an unknown projectile, causing a fire onboard.

The organisation advised all vessels operating in the region to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities while investigations continue.  Shipping companies and naval authorities have increased surveillance in the area as concerns grow about attacks targeting commercial vessels.

Iran-Israel War: Why the Strait of Hormuz is a Critical Global Shipping Route

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most strategically important waterways in the world. The narrow passage connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serves as a key route for global trade and energy supplies. Nearly 20% of the world’s oil shipments pass through this corridor every day, making it vital for international energy markets.

Because of its strategic importance, any disruption in this area can quickly affect global shipping, oil prices, and international trade. Recent tensions in the region have already forced several shipping companies to reconsider routes or delay cargo movements due to security risks.

The attack occurred at a time when military tensions are increasing across the Gulf region. Recent developments include drone strikes, missile launches, and attacks on energy infrastructure.

Commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz have become increasingly vulnerable as the conflict spreads beyond military targets to critical trade routes.

Security analysts warn that continued attacks on shipping vessels could disrupt global supply chains and raise shipping costs. Such disruptions could also push up global oil prices, affecting economies worldwide.

Iran-Israel War Latest News: Impact on Global Shipping & Trade

If attacks on vessels continue, shipping companies may begin avoiding the Strait of Hormuz altogether. This would force ships to take longer alternative routes, increasing transportation costs and delivery times.

Insurance premiums for ships operating in the region have already started rising due to growing security risks. For countries like India, which rely heavily on energy imports passing through this route, prolonged disruption could have significant economic consequences.

Authorities and maritime agencies are closely monitoring the situation as naval forces from several countries increase patrols in the Gulf to protect commercial shipping lanes. Experts say the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the Strait of Hormuz remains safe for global trade or becomes a major flashpoint in the expanding regional conflict.
