A dramatic video circulating on social media has intensified global concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes. The footage, widely shared on X and other platforms, appears to show dozens of oil tankers and cargo ships forming a long stationary line across the waterway.

The viral clip has triggered speculation that the strait may be effectively closed or severely restricted after escalating military tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Iran-Israel War Latest Update: What Does the Viral Strait of Hormuz Video Show?

The video, filmed from a distance, shows multiple vessels anchored in a straight sequence, creating what looks like a traffic queue stretching for kilometres. Social media users claim the vessels remain stuck as regional tensions disrupt maritime movement.

One user wrote while sharing the footage, “Strait of Hormuz: Oil tankers and cargo ships form a queue stretching for kilometres. Since the Strait is responsible for about 20% of global oil trade, the disruption is driving up oil and gas prices. If this lasts a month, what will happen?”

The video has rapidly gained traction as people search for updates on the status of global oil supply routes.

Has Iran Closed the Strait of Hormuz?

Iranian state media earlier reported strong warnings from military officials. Ebrahim Jabari, a senior adviser to the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, stated, “The strait (of Hormuz) is closed. If anyone tries to pass, the heroes of the Revolutionary Guards and the regular navy will set those ships ablaze.”

The Iranian military also warned, “No ship is allowed to pass the Strait of Hormuz”.

However, a US military official denied claims that the strait had been formally closed. Meanwhile, an official from the European Union’s naval mission Aspides reportedly confirmed that ships in the region were receiving VHF radio transmissions from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

This conflicting information has created confusion about whether the waterway is officially shut or facing operational slowdowns due to security concerns.

Iran-Israel War Latest Update: How Many Ships Are Stuck in the Strait of Hormuz?

Reports indicate that congestion in the strait has affected a significant portion of the global shipping fleet.

According to Jeremy Nixon, CEO of container shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE), about 10% of the world’s container ships are caught in the disruption. He said, “About 10% of the container ship global fleet is caught up in this.”

Nixon added that nearly 750 vessels, including around 100 container ships, are currently affected by the backlog.

The Persian Gulf route is crucial because it connects to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, serving as a gateway for nearly one-fifth of global oil trade.

Why Is the Strait of Hormuz Important for Global Oil Trade?

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly 20% of the world’s oil shipments. Any disruption in this narrow passage immediately affects oil prices, shipping costs, and global markets.

Energy traders have already reacted nervously. Oil prices surged amid fears of prolonged disruption. If the congestion continues for weeks, experts warn of broader economic consequences, including rising fuel costs and supply chain delays.

Iran-Israel War Latest Update: Middle East Conflict Escalates to Day 5

The current crisis follows joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior officials. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting US and Israeli assets in Bahrain, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates.

Subsequently, Iran’s semi-official media reported that Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei was elected as the country’s new Supreme Leader.

As tensions escalate, online searches for “Strait of Hormuz news” and “Iran” have surged sharply, reflecting widespread global concern.

For now, uncertainty surrounds the true operational status of the strait. But with hundreds of ships reportedly delayed and military warnings intensifying, the world continues to watch this critical waterway closely.
