A massive environmental disaster is unfolding off the coast of Oman as a stranded oil tanker leaks millions of litres of crude into regional waters, creating a sprawling slick that international agencies warn is fast becoming one of the worst marine catastrophes in recent history.
The vessel, identified as the shadow-fleet tanker Caroline Bezengi, ran aground near the protected Hallaniyat Islands following an onboard explosion amidst intense regional maritime disruptions tied to ongoing geopolitical hostilities.

Maritime security sources confirmed that the crippled vessel first encountered severe propulsion and structural difficulties off the coast of Yemen on 8 June, following what preliminary assessments indicated was a blast onboard.
Carrying approximately 800,000 barrels of Russian crude oil destined for Asian markets, the sanction-hit tanker drifted southward before grounding near an ecologically sensitive marine nature reserve established by Omani royal decree. While initial government disclosures from Muscat estimated the affected surface area at roughly 400 square kilometres, updated satellite analyses reviewed by independent oil spill specialists indicate that the toxic slick has rapidly expanded to cover more than 2,000 square kilometres.

John Amos, chief executive officer of the satellite monitoring nonprofit SkyTruth, highlighted the glaring absence of stabilisation or cleanup efforts at the wreckage site over the past two weeks.
“We haven’t seen that on publicly available satellite imagery, we haven’t seen that on satellite-collected AIS tracking data, and that’s a concern,” Amos stated, pointing out the severe hazards posed by unmonitored maritime hazards during a period of heightened naval friction in the Middle East.

“If this oil is kept offshore, the impact will be much less than if the oil reaches shallower waters and the actual coastline,” explained Tony Gutierrez, a professor of environmental microbiology and biotechnology at Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt University. “You could find oil still there years later. And that’s what happened with Exxon Valdez.”
