Israel-Iran Latest News: Myanmar is now implementing fuel rationing, a move linked to the global supply chain's struggles, which have been exacerbated by the escalating conflicts in the Middle East. The National Defence and Security Council (NDSC) announced the measures as the country receives reduced quantities of refined fuel due to the increasing prices, which have been directly affected by the US-Israel-Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Effective from March 7, an odd-even rule will be implemented in Myanmar for private vehicles. Cars with even numbers can drive on even dates while cars with odd numbers can drive on odd dates. However, electric vehicles will be exempt from this rule and it was also cautioned that storing fuel to sell at higher prices will attract serious legal consequences.
Petrol and diesel prices have risen by 10-30% in major cities in Myanmar due to disruptions in oil supplies from the Strait of Hormuz. The prices in border areas have risen even more due to fuel shortages and resulting in people seeking supplies from Thailand.
In Yangon, the commercial capital of Myanmar, people expressed their dissatisfaction with the recent restrictions, stating how much they need their cars to get around the city. In the border towns such as Myawaddy, which are near the Thai town of Mae Sot, people are forced to cross the border to refuel their cars, causing long queues at the gas stations in Thailand.
Myanmar mainly depends on refined fuels imported from Singapore and Malaysia, which receive their oil from Middle Eastern countries. The latest tanker stoppages resulting from the US-Israel conflict with Iran have increased fuel prices globally while there are secondary sources from Russia and Thailand, but these cannot meet the demand.
Soaring fuel prices are putting pressure on Myanmar's struggling economy and making people's lives more difficult, especially when it comes to electricity supply and bills. Analysts have warned of a possible increase in living costs and mobility for millions of people following fuel rationing.
