Israel-Iran War Update: The intensifying war between Israel and Iran has become very personal. The wife of the Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, has passed on following alleged critical wounds sustained in the recent US-Israel air attacks. Her death was referred to by Iranian state media Press TV as martyrdom, even though confirmation is not yet received by the Iranian authorities. This is after she was killed following reports that Khamenei himself was killed during the same salvage in the wave of strikes, which is one of the most significant chapters in the modern history of the region.
According to The state-affiliated media claimed that Bagherzadeh suffered injuries when strategic targets in Tehran and other cities were attacked. She eventually died of those injuries. The attacks which were said to have commenced early Saturday morning were aimed at missile installations, naval bases and security compounds. The Red Crescent in Iran reports the death of at least 555 citizens in the country with over 130 cities hit. The number of civilian casualties has not been easy to prove independently.
Bagherzadeh was born in the second largest city of Iran in Mashhad, in a family that is well established in terms of religion and commerce. Her father Mohammad Esmaeil Khojasteh Bagherzadeh is a local businessman and her brother served in senior positions at the state broadcaster of Iran IRIB.
She met Khamenei in 1964 and got married a year later. Although she has been married to one of the most influential people of Islamic Republic decades long, she maintained a low profile. She hardly ever came out to official events and was mostly absent in political debate with the family and religious engagements as her preoccupations. The family had six children, two daughters and four sons.
According to reports by Fars News Agency, some of the close relatives of Khamenei were as well murdered. There was a daughter, son-in-law and a granddaughter among them. The daughter-in-law was noted in the news is Zahra Haddad Adel, the wife of Mojtaba Khamenei. Other identities are yet to be independently confirmed.
Iranian media report that Khamenei, 86 year old, had died during the first stage of the strikes. The US and Israeli officials described the attacks as intended to attack strategic military targets. His death is, in case it is proven, an earthquake in the Iranian political and religious leadership.
In a post on his Truth Social, the US President Donald Trump described the alleged death of Khamenei as a form of justice and it was a revenge against the leadership in Tehran. The comments have also contributed to the escalation of tensions in the region.
The reported leadership shift in Tehran has sparked a strong response in the world arena. The US, European countries and other regional players are keeping a close eye on the situation, as there are concerns about the potential threat to stability and further escalation of the situation. Several leaders have called for restraint to avoid a larger conflict in the Middle East. There are reports of the deaths of prominent leaders, although not all of them have been confirmed, creating a state of confusion in the political transition in Iran.
