Jackie, the celebrated bald eagle whose life was chronicled by millions through a livestream trained on her nest above Big Bear Lake, has died at the age of 14, according to the Ojai Raptor Center, which had been treating her for a serious illness.
The centre said in a statement shared on social media on the afternoon of Monday, August 10, that Jackie died “in the early hours of this morning” following an extended period of intensive care. Her death brings to a close nearly a decade in which she became one of California’s most recognisable wildlife figures, watched over by a devoted global audience through cameras operated by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley.
Jackie the Eagle: A decline despite intensive treatment
Jackie had been under veterinary care since mid-July, after she was found unable to fly along the shores of Big Bear Lake following an altercation with two juvenile bald eagles. She was admitted to the Ojai Raptor Center on July 18 and catalogued as Patient 26-519, beginning what would become more than three weeks of round-the-clock medical attention.
According to the centre, her condition worsened steadily in her final days despite the efforts of its veterinary team and outside specialists who were consulted on her case. “Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists,” the Ojai Raptor Center said in its statement. The centre added that she “remained critically ill, receiving oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, and around-the-clock monitoring in our intensive care unit.”
Fans of the nest, many of whom had followed Jackie’s fortunes for years, had held out hope that she would recover sufficiently to be released back into the wild and reunited with her longtime mate, Shadow.

News of her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from admirers who had followed her story through years of storms, hatchings and setbacks. The Ojai Raptor Center acknowledged the scale of that attachment in its announcement, writing that “we know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her, and supported the people caring for her.” Center staff described the loss in personal terms, adding that “our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her.”
Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that has operated the nest camera and built a large following around Jackie and Shadow’s story, shared the update from the raptor centre on its own social media channels. In a brief accompanying message, the group wrote that “it is with great sadness and heavy hearts, to bring you the latest update from Ojai Raptor Center.”
The Ojai Raptor Center confirmed that Jackie’s remains have since been transferred into the custody of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, a standard step for the state agency responsible for the protection of native wildlife.

Jackie’s rise to prominence began after she paired with Shadow in 2018, and the two are widely believed to have produced the first recorded bald eagle chick hatched in Big Bear back in 2012. Over the years that followed, the pair became reliable, if unlikely, stars of wildlife livestreaming, their nest perched some 150 feet up a tree overlooking Big Bear Valley in the San Bernardino National Forest drawing a loyal following that numbered in the hundreds of thousands.
Their story was not without heartbreak. The couple endured repeated losses, including a clutch of eggs devoured by ravens in one nesting season and the death of an eaglet named Misty during a winter storm the following year. Yet they also delivered moments of collective celebration for their online audience, successfully hatching and fledging six eaglets across their years together, among them two chicks named Sunny and Gizmo who themselves developed something of a fan following.
The pair’s bond with their audience deepened further after Jackie briefly vanished from the nest for nearly a full day in March, an episode that triggered widespread concern among followers before she returned safely. That relief, expressed at the time by fans across social media, now stands in contrast to the permanence of Monday’s news.

Jackie’s popularity had also translated into tangible support for conservation efforts in the region. The hatching of her eaglets in recent years helped drive donations to a joint fundraising project between Friends of Big Bear Valley and the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust, aimed at protecting the foraging grounds relied upon by the local eagle population.
Her death now leaves Shadow without his longtime mate, and marks the end of a chapter that conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts alike had come to regard as an unusually intimate window into the private lives of a species once endangered across much of the United States. Bald eagles were removed from the federal endangered species list in 2007 after decades of recovery efforts, and stories such as Jackie’s have played a significant role in sustaining public interest in their continued protection.
Friends of Big Bear Valley has not yet announced whether the nest camera will continue to operate, or whether Shadow might eventually pair with another mate at the site that Jackie helped make famous.
