Authorities noted that his last known phone activity also occurred that same evening.

On June 2, Nancy shared that she and her husband had attempted to search wooded areas at night using flashlights and headlamps but were forced to turn back because of difficult terrain and wildlife encounters.
On June 3, Japanese authorities expanded the search operation, deploying approximately 50 police officers, K9 units, and helicopters to comb the mountainous and forested areas around Yamashina. Officials said wet and steep terrain made the operation especially challenging.
