Japan Tourism Decline: The Big Update

The Japan National Tourism Organization, Japan’s leading tourism agency recently dropped a big update. Inbound foreign tourism dropped by about 3.6% this May, for the second consecutive month (figures for April were also low).

However, the agency also stated that the impact of the US-Iran war did not have an adverse impact on tourism in Japan, like they were expecting. “Currently it is difficult to predict the extent of the impact on inbound tourism demand”, Shigeki Murata, the commissioner of the Japan National Tourism Organisation stated.

Japan Tourism Decline: Why is Tourism Declining in Japan?

Tourism as a whole is not declining as a whole. However, inbound tourism from Chinese people has heavily suffered, owing to strained bilateral ties and regional tensions. Reports suggest that the number of tourists from China fell by 60.4% recently.

Japan Tourism Decline: Why Taiwan May Have Played A Part

Many believe that Taiwan may have played a part in the sudden decline of Chinese tourists. Last year,  Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made a bombshell statement about Taiwan.

She stated that in case of any Chinese attack on Taiwan, it would qualify as a “survival threatening situation for Japan”. Takachi’s stance is similar to that of her late mentor Shinzo Abe, who stated that “A Taiwan emergency is a Japan emergency”.

Japan and Taiwan have historically enjoyed warm relations with each other with reports suggesting that both countries share mutually admirable opinions.

Trends in Japan’s Foreign Tourism: Regional Breakdown

According to the report by the Japan National Tourism Organization, inbound tourism from China notably declined. While, the number of tourists from South Korea and Taiwan had risen rapidly.

Surprisingly, there was also an increase in inbound tourism from the Middle East, despite the recent war there. More tourists from Britain and Germany visited the country last month, after a decline in European tourists.

As a result, South Korea currently ranks highest when it comes to foreign inbound tourism (951,300) with Taiwan at a close second (616,800). The US came third (333,700) after a 7% increase. China slipped to fourth, although the exact number for how many Chinese tourists visited Japan in May 2026 has not been publicly disclosed.
