Japan has been facing turbulent weather since yesterday due to Storm Jangmi. Now, ,many fear that it could lead to typhoons, floods and widespread weather change. So far, the storm has injured 28 people.Â

Since the start of this month, Japan has been experiencing catastrophic weather conditions, which include extremely high rainfall, heavy winds and thunderstorms. Now multiple people, especially those living near water have been urged to evacuate and seek shelter. Â
What is Storm Jangmi?Â
Storm Jangmi is a dangerous and severe storm that initially originated in late May near the Philippine Sea. It was initially categorised as a typhoon and then downgraded to ‘severe tropical storm’. The storm entered Japan through the Wakayama Prefecture and subsequently spread to the rest of the country.Â
Causes of Storm Jangmi
Experts have not pinpointed a clear cause for the storm. But most agree that warm oceanic waters, lack of strong winds and favourable monsoon condition were significant driving factors. It is important to note that early June to mid July is often considered to be Japan’s regular rainy season, which is locally called tsuyu or plum rain.  Â
Damage Caused by the Storms in JapanÂ
So, far the storm has caused injuries to 28 people and power outages in over 60,000 homes. It also flooded multiple rivers and roads and led to multiple flight cancellations. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan also stated that it caused landslides and mud slides in multiple parts of the country. An official casualty count has not been shared.  Â
Is Japan at Risk of Tsunamis & Floods? Â
Yes, Japan is currently at high risk for floods. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan officially issued a level 5 flood alert and is actively monitoring water level of multiple rivers. There is also a strong likelihood of landslides and mud slides. However, no tsunami alerts have been issued recently.   Â
