The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has been ordered by a Superior US Court judge to pay over $250,000 in legal fees to jazz musician Chuck Redd, marking a significant conclusion to a contentious legal battle.
The ruling follows the dismissal of a lawsuit the institution had initiated against the acclaimed jazz drummer and vibraphonist, who had withdrawn from a scheduled performance to protest the addition of US President Donald Trump’s name to the arts institution, according to reports.
DC Superior Court Judge Tanya Jones Bosier mandated that the Kennedy Center pay $252,479.70 in attorneys’ fees and costs, effectively covering nearly the entire sum requested by the musician’s legal counsel.
Kennedy Center Chuck Redd Lawsuit: Why Was the Lawsuit Dismissed by the Court?
The legal conflict originated in December 2025, when the Kennedy Center’s board voted to incorporate the name of US President Donald Trump into the building’s branding. Redd, who had been scheduled to perform at the institution’s annual free Christmas Eve “Jazz Jam,” chose to cancel his participation and publicly explained his opposition to the renaming. In response, Kennedy Center leadership, under the tenure of then-president Richard Grenell, threatened Mr Redd with a $1 million lawsuit, accusing the artist of orchestrating a “political stunt.”
The institution subsequently filed a breach of contract suit in March 2026.
However, Judge Bosier dismissed the case in June, determining that no valid contract had ever been signed for the performance.
Furthermore, the court sided with the musician under the District of Columbia’s Anti-SLAPP Act, which is designed to protect citizens from meritless litigation intended to intimidate those speaking out on matters of public interest.

Legal representatives for the musician have heralded the decision as a vindication of free expression. Lisa J. Banks, the attorney representing Redd, stated, “The Trump-controlled Kennedy Center tried to silence opposition to its illegal name change by filing a meritless lawsuit against jazz musician Chuck Redd. Now the court has ordered the Kennedy Center to pay Mr Redd’s legal fees, which is appropriate as no citizen should have to spend time and money fending off baseless and politically motivated lawsuits filed by the Trump Administration.”
While the Kennedy Center had contested the requested amount as disproportionate, arguing the fees were “astonishing,” Judge Bosier found the sum justified given the extensive work required to defend against the litigation. The ruling serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences for organisations that utilise the court system to challenge protected public discourse, reinforcing the protections afforded to artists within the US.
