According to multiple reports, the board of the Kennedy Center in Washington DC has agreed to put a temporary halt on restoring President Donald Trump’s name.
The board, which includes multiple members appointed by Trump, told a federal court that it will not attempt to restore Trump’s name before September 8 at the earliest. The board members voted earlier this month to put Trump’s name back on the building’s facade, crediting him for recent restoration and renovation work.
Kennedy Center Row: Why Is Trump’s Name Being Added to the Kennedy Center Again?
The latest proposal is part of Trump’s broader effort to reshape prominent Washington institutions and landmarks. The Kennedy Center board has argued that Trump’s role in restoring and renovating the facility justifies recognizing him on the building. According to news agency Reuters, the performing arts’ board voted 20-3 in favour of President Trump.
Trump Kennedy Center Controversy: A Political Coverup?
The presence of the giant tarp as well as the scaffolding have attracted swift backlash. Many democrats have taken aim at the Trump administration and accused it of a political coverup.
Democrat Rep. Joyce Beatty filed a lawsuit against the government and Norm Eisen from her legal counsel Democracy Defenders Action along with Nathaniel Zelinsky with Washington Litigation Group stated “Now we will be able to move to discovery and get to the bottom of Trump’s corrupt, failed attempt to seize this national treasure”.
Eisen then added that “The court also puts the government on a timeline regarding the tarp covering President Kennedy’s name on the front of the Center. They will be forced to explain themselves”.
Beatty herself claimed that the blocking of the facade is an act of ‘petty defiance’. Fellow Democratic rep Jamie Raskin, also slammed the lingering presence of the tarp, describing it as “A literal coverup, to add to all the others. Nobody’s fooled”.
Kennedy Center Row: What Lies Ahead
The board members have agreed that President Trump’s name won’t be restored until September 8, 2o26. But what happens afterwards? Some are wondering whether the federal court will block the latest signage proposal before the Kennedy Center can implement it. It is also likely that the lawyers of Rep. Joyce Beatty will urge Judge Christopher Cooper to intervene again.
