The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court held an emergency hearing Friday in the Lindsay Clancy case after her defense sought intervention over a deadlocked jury and the possibility of a mistrial. The hearing came as jurors again told the trial judge they could not reach a unanimous verdict after seven days of deliberations.

Clancy, 36, is accused of killing her three young children in 2023. Her defense has argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible. Prosecutors, however, have maintained that the killings were deliberate and that Clancy acted intentionally.

Defense Seeks Emergency Court Intervention

The defense was given a brief window to approach the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court before Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial. Defense attorney Dana Goldblatt told the court that the legal team had already been preparing an emergency petition seeking action over a juror who was allegedly holding out against a unanimous verdict.

The defense wanted the judge to either further question the juror or consider removing the juror from the panel. According to the defense, the request was aimed at preventing the case from ending in a mistrial.

Justice Dalila Argaez Wendlandt heard the emergency arguments and indicated that she understood the defense’s position before considering whether the court should intervene.

Jury Deadlock Drives Latest Court Drama

The emergency hearing followed another note from jurors saying they remained unable to reach a unanimous decision. The jury had already spent seven days deliberating over the charges against Clancy.

The defense had previously raised concerns about a potential lone holdout juror. Judge Sullivan declined to question that juror, setting the stage for Friday’s emergency appeal.

The dispute has become a critical moment in the case because the outcome of the jury deliberations could determine whether Clancy is convicted, acquitted, or faces another trial.

What Charges Does Lindsay Clancy Face?

Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder over the deaths of her children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months old.

Jurors were also allowed to consider lesser charges, including second-degree murder and manslaughter. The defense has strongly opposed a conviction on any of the charges and has sought the possibility of an acquittal.

CNN legal analyst Laura Coates said the defense strategy was focused on preserving as many possible outcomes for Clancy as possible, while prosecutors were seeking a decisive result.

Defense Relies on Postpartum Psychosis Argument

A central issue in the trial has been Clancy’s mental state at the time of the killings.

Her attorneys have argued that she experienced postpartum psychosis, a severe mental health condition that can cause a person to lose touch with reality. The defense has maintained that this condition affected her ability to understand or control her actions.

Prosecutors have rejected that interpretation and argued that Clancy’s actions were intentional and calculated.

The conflicting arguments over her mental state have been central to the trial and could remain important if the case is retried.

What Happens After a Possible Mistrial?

If the judge formally declares a mistrial because the jury cannot reach a unanimous verdict, prosecutors could potentially seek a new trial.

The latest emergency appeal shows how strongly the defense is trying to prevent the current proceedings from ending without a verdict. The legal fight over the jury could therefore have consequences beyond the immediate deliberations.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s decision on the emergency request is expected to determine whether the trial judge must take further action before the proceedings move forward.
