London Gatwick Airport News: A Norse Atlantic flight, which was headed to New York, encountered some technical issues and was held up on the tarmac at London Gatwick Airport. Consequently, the runway was closed for 50 minutes, which resulted in flights experiencing delays. The company Flightradar24 noted that flights were delayed by around 50%.

London Gatwick Airport News: Which Flights Were Delayed?

More than 330 flights faced severe delays after Norse Atlantic Airways flight Z0701, travelling from London Gatwick to New York-JFK, suffered a rejected takeoff and became disabled on the runway. The disruption affected Gatwick’s wider flight schedule, with both arrivals and departures facing delays. Flight-tracking data later showed that around 50% of flights were delayed, while about 3% were cancelled, with the average delay lasting more than 50 minutes.

Where Were Flights Diverted?

Several flights that were due to land at Gatwick were diverted while the runway was closed. The alternative airports included:

  • London Luton Airport
  • London Stansted Airport
  • Birmingham Airport
  • Bristol Airport
  • London Heathrow Airport

The diversions meant some passengers landed at airports far from their original Gatwick destination and were left needing onward travel arrangements.

Which Runway Closed?

Runway 26L was temporarily closed after the NYC-bound aircraft became disabled following its rejected takeoff. Gatwick said the runway remained closed for approximately 50 minutes while teams dealt with the aircraft. The plane was eventually towed away, and the runway underwent a full safety inspection before normal operations resumed.

What Is Gatwick’s Airport Latest Update?

London Gatwick confirmed that the runway had reopened following the incident on Friday, September 4, 2026. An airport spokesperson said the closure was caused by a technical issue involving a departing aircraft and confirmed that the aircraft was removed from the runway before safety checks were completed.

“The runway was closed for 50 minutes this afternoon (Friday 4 September) due to a technical issue with a departing aircraft.”

The airport added that the runway reopened shortly afterwards following a full safety inspection and stressed that safety and security remained its number one priority.

What Should Passengers Do?

  • Find out their flight details through their airline prior to travelling.
  • Make sure they give themselves plenty of time because the delays will likely continue even after the runway reopens.
  • Contact the airline if they find that their fight has been diverted.
  • Follow the airline’s advice on getting to their final destination if they arrive at another airport.
  • Regardless of the travel time, ask for assistance if there is a lengthy delay.
