M6 Traffic Update Today: What Happened Today?

The M6 remains fully closed in both directions between Junction 15 (Stoke-on-Trent South) and Junction 16 (Stoke-on-Trent North / Crewe) due to a very serious collision involving three heavy goods vehicles (lorries) and a car.

At approximately 4:10 AM this morning, a major multi-vehicle accident occurred on the northbound carriageway. Staffordshire Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service, and Staffordshire Fire & Rescue units rushed to the scene.

M6 Traffic Update Today: Affected Routes

The main route affected by today’s severe travel disruption is the M6 in both directions between Junction 15 (Stoke-on-Trent South) and Junction 16 (Stoke-on-Trent North / Crewe), which is entirely closed due to a serious four-vehicle collision.

  • A500 Queensway: Experiencing gridlock and miles of stationary queues as it serves as the primary diversion route for both northbound and southbound traffic.

  • A50 Westbound: Severe delays and slow-moving bottlenecks between Blurton and Sideway due to vehicles bypassing the motorway.

  • A34 (Stone Road): Witnessing significantly higher traffic volume than normal through Stone and into Stafford.

  • Local Cut-throughs: Roads around Westbury Park and Clayton Road are heavily congested with drivers attempting to avoid the main arterial lanes.

M6 Traffic Update Today: Alternative Routes

  • Northbound Strategic Bypass: Divert early by leaving the M6 at Junction 11 or 12 to take the A5 northbound to the A41, which connects up to the M54 or feeds back into the A49/A51 toward Cheshire and Manchester.

  • Southbound Strategic Bypass: From the Manchester/Cheshire region, use the M56 Eastbound to access the M60/M62, and then travel down the M1 Southbound instead of the M6 to entirely circumvent Staffordshire.

  • The Eastern Alternative: For travel between the East Midlands and the North, utilize the A50 Eastbound toward Derby to hook into the M1, completely avoiding the West Midlands/Cheshire M6 bottleneck.

M6 Traffic Update Today: When Will it Reopen?

The M6 is expected to remain closed into this afternoon, with National Highways warning that a protracted emergency response and recovery operation is underway.
