Graham Platner, the winner of Maine's Primary Election for 2026 has formally withdrawn from the race, after a string of allegations, including sexual assault. The Democrat Party has time till July 27 to seek a replacement, with 6 candidates already willing to step up.

Maine Elections 2026 Latest News: Graham Platner Withdraws from Senate Race 

Graham Platner, who won the Democrat primary for Maine’s senate election has officially withdrawn from the race. In a letter sent to the Maine secretary of state’s office Platner wrote ‘I write to formally withdraw my candidacy for United States ​Senate’. 

The letter mentioned some of his electoral promises like his drive for national healthcare, and a wish to ‘Free Palestine’. It ended with a strongly worded criticism of the Donald Trump backed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, which has sparked immense backlash for its detention practices.   

Maine Elections 2026 Latest News: Why Did Graham Platner Back Out? 

Platner’s letter to the Maine secretary of state’s office did not mention a clear cut reason for his withdrawal. But ever since he stepped into the fray, his candidature has been subjected to scandals.

Just last week, one of Platner’s exes recently accused him of sexual assault in an interview which detailed her ordeal and quickly garnered widespread attention. 

And in the days leading up to the primary, another one of Platner’s ex girlfriends alleged that he “regularly grabbed her by the shoulders – sometimes hard enough to leave marks – and, on one occasion, yanked her out of a cab by her wrist after an argument when she wanted to stay in the car”. 

Platner also shared sexually explicit texts to multiple women, despite being married. He admitted to the infidelity and the sexting, stating “My wife went through something hard – because of me”. He also claimed to cover up the controversial Swastika tattoo on his chest, which went viral.

Maine Elections 2026 Latest News: What Happens Next

Platner’s withdrawal means that his name won’t appear on the ballot on November 3. The Democrat Party has time till July 27 to seek a replacement. But the replacement part won’t be too much of a hassle, as the following six candidates have already thrown their hat into the ring:

  • Nirav Shah, a lawyer and epidemiologist 

  • Troy Jackson, a fifth-generation logger  

  • Dan Kleban, the co owner of Maine Beer Company microbrewery

  • Jordan Wood, a former Congress staffer

  • Paige Loud a social worker who also lost a campaign to ‌win the ⁠House seat;  

  • Shenna Ballows, the current secretary of state for Maine who finished fourth during the June contest to become Democrat’s governor nominee.

Maine Primary Election Result 2026: A Quick Recap 

During the results of the Maine Primary election last month, Graham Platner from the Democratic party won dominantly. Platner defeated Maine governor Janet Mills by a massive margin of 71.8%. He is all set to face Republican senator Susan Mills in November.
