According to reports, Troy Jackson, the former president of Maine’s Senate has emerged as the key frontrunner to replace disgraced candidate Graham Platner. And ahead of the Democrat party’s convention on July 25th, Jackson has become the one to watch.
Who is Troy Jackson?
Hailing from Allagash, Maine, Troy Jackson is an American fifth-generation logger, progressive labor champion and former president of Maine’s senate. He is a staunch supporter of LGBTQ rights, abortion rights and worker rights. Jackson also ran in the Democrat primary for Maine’s governor election but lost to Hannah Pingree.
Maine Elections 2026 Latest News: Why Did Graham Platner Withdraw?
Platner’s letter to the Maine secretary of state’s office did not mention a clear cut reason for his withdrawal. But ever since he stepped into the fray, his candidature has been subjected to scandals.
A few weeks ago, one of Platner’s exes recently accused him of sexual assault in an interview which detailed her ordeal and quickly garnered widespread attention.
And in the days leading up to the primary, another one of Platner’s ex girlfriends alleged that he “regularly grabbed her by the shoulders – sometimes hard enough to leave marks – and, on one occasion, yanked her out of a cab by her wrist after an argument when she wanted to stay in the car”.
Platner also shared sexually explicit texts to multiple women, despite being married. He admitted to the infidelity and the sexting, stating “My wife went through something hard – because of me”. He also claimed to cover up the controversial Swastika tattoo on his chest, which went viral.
Maine Primary Election Result 2026: What Happened?
During the results of the Maine Primary election last month, Graham Platner from the Democratic party won dominantly. Platner defeated Maine governor Janet Mills by a massive margin of 71.8%.
He was all set to face Republican senator Susan Mills in November. But a string of controversies, including assault allegations from one of his exes derailed Platner’s campaign, as multiple Democrats rescinded their support for him.
