Maine Senate Election Latest Update: Multiple Contenders Withdraw From Maine’s Senate Election Race As Troy Jackson’s Prospects for Democrat Nomination Rise

Troy Jackson, the former president of Maine’s Senate has become the favourite to be the Democrat party's nominee for the state's senate race after all of his opponents withdrew. His nomination will need to be confirmed at a party convention scheduled for July 25th.

This morning multiple candidates including Shenna Bellows and Nirav Shah officially dropped out from the race to replace Graham Platner in Maine’s Senate election. Troy Jackson, the former president of Maine’s Senate has become the favourite, with even endorsements from some of his former opponents. 

Maine Senate Election Latest Update: All Candidates Drop Out From Maine’s Senate Election Race

This morning, candidates like Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, Nirav Shah, the former director of Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Maine Beer Company co-founder Dan Kleban and Jordan Wood withdrew their candidature from the senate election race of Maine. All of them subsequently announced their support for the former president of Maine’s senate, Troy Jackson. They claimed that the party’s focus should be on how to defeat veteran senator Susan Mills.

Maine Senate Election Latest Update: Troy Jackson’s Lead Widens 

The exodus means that Troy Jackson now has a commanding lead in the senate elections race for Maine, a key New England state. He now has the support of fellow former opponents, voters from the state’s most populous county of Cumberland and Our Revolution, a left leaning organisation founded by Bernie Sanders. 

Ironically, Sanders’ organisation initially backed Graham Platner the disgraced winner of the Democrat primary who withdrew after multiple scandals damaged his reputation and support.  

Who is Troy Jackson? 

Hailing from Allagash, Maine, Troy Jackson is an American fifth-generation logger, progressive labor champion and former president of Maine’s senate. He is a staunch supporter of LGBTQ rights, abortion rights and worker rights. Jackson also ran in the Democrat primary for Maine’s governor election but lost to Hannah Pingree.

After the surprising exodus, Troy Jackson is now the Democrat party’s presumptive nominee for the Maine senate elections. But his nomination will need to be confirmed at a party convention scheduled for July 25th.

Maine Primary Election Result 2026: What Happened?

During the results of the Maine Primary election last month, Graham Platner from the Democratic party won dominantly. Platner defeated Maine governor Janet Mills by a massive margin of 71.8%. 

He was all set to face Republican senator Susan Mills in November. But a string of controversies, including assault allegations from one of his exes derailed Platner’s campaign, as multiple Democrats rescinded their support for him.

Maine Senate Election Results 2022: A Quick Recap 

In the 2022 Senate elections of Maine, the Democrat party successfully claimed 22 out of 35 seats in the New England state. And Troy Jackson got elected as the president of Maine’s senate.
