First lady Melania Trump has not made a public appearance in nearly a month, according to an NBC News analysis published on Monday, having last been seen on 19th July at the FIFA World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, alongside President Donald Trump, their son Barron and the president’s four other children.
Since then, she has skipped a string of high-profile occasions that first ladies would traditionally be expected to attend, including the dignified transfer of the remains of four US service members on 22nd July, the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, and the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham.
“While she continues to work behind-the-scenes on her passion projects, Melania Trump has not appeared at a public engagement in nearly a month, opting to skip several high-profile events that a first lady would traditionally attend,” NBC News reported.

The first lady has done about half as many public events as she did at this point in President Donald Trump’s first term, according to the NBC News analysis. A separate audit conducted by The Daily Beast found that Melania has been seen in public on just 38 days so far in 2026, averaging an appearance roughly once every six days, a figure that includes both official engagements and occasions when she was simply photographed. Her schedule thinned further over the summer months, with only five public appearances logged across June and July combined, two of which were sporting events.
The contrast with her husband’s first term is stark: during the equivalent 18-month stretch of Trump’s first presidency, Melania appeared publicly on more than 140 days, meaning she has maintained roughly 60 percent of her previous public workload this time around.

A senior adviser to the first lady told NBC News that Melania “prioritises results over appearances,” framing her reduced visibility as a deliberate choice rather than a retreat from her duties. Melania herself has previously defended her approach to the role, telling Fox News Digital at the premiere of her self-titled documentary that she remains selective by design. “I’m very selective in what I do, when I talk,” she said, adding that she is “mission and action-oriented.”

The disparity becomes more pronounced when measured against her predecessors. According to the Daily Beast’s analysis, Melania has delivered 29 speeches since her husband returned to office, compared with 130 delivered by Michelle Obama over an equivalent period and 43 by Jill Biden, who was also teaching full-time during her tenure. Roughly 80 per cent of Melania’s public appearances this year have taken place in Washington, with only scattered visits to states including New York, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and New Jersey, a far cry from predecessors such as Laura Bush, who visited all 50 states and more than 75 countries during her time as first lady.

The reduced visibility has coincided with a marked decline in her public approval. According to CNN/SSRS polling cited by CNN data analyst Harry Enten, Melania’s net approval rating has fallen to minus 12 points, roughly 29 per cent favourable against 41 per cent unfavourable, placing her behind the ratings recorded by Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton at comparable points in their husbands’ second terms. Despite the political cost, the first lady’s business ventures have continued to flourish; financial disclosures show she has earned more than 17.2 million dollars this year from her documentary, an NFT collection and book sales.

Aides have offered no indication of when Melania might resume a more active public schedule, and the White House has not announced any imminent engagements.
