Michigan Synagogue Attack:  A violent attack occurred on Thursday at a synagogue located near Detroit when an armed man drove his car into the building before being shot dead by security personnel. The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later identified the perpetrator as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalised US citizen of Lebanese descent.  The identification of the perpetrator was done through a statement released to The Hill.

Who Was Ayman Mohamad Ghazali?

According to officials from DHS, Ghazali was born in Lebanon but later moved to the US after he married an American citizen. He was born in Lebanon on January 4, 1985 and he entered the United States on May 10, 2011, at Detroit Metropolitan International Airport on an IR1 immigrant visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen after alien relative and fiancé petitions filed in December 2009 were approved in April 2010.

The statement further indicated that he later became a US citizen. He applied for naturalization on October 20, 2015, and was granted U.S. citizenship on February 5, 2016, under the Obama administration.

Ghazali lived in Dearborn Heights, a suburb of Detroit. He worked at a local restaurant. His life was also marred by challenges, as he was going through a divorce process at the time of the attack. His ex-wife filed for divorce in August 2024. The couple had one child.

How the Michigan Synagogue Attack Happened at Temple Israel

The attack occurred at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, which is one of the largest synagogues in the US and has nearly 12,000 members. The synagogue is a Reform synagogue. The police stated that Ghazali was armed and had a rifle and that he drove his car through a hallway in the synagogue. The security officers responded and shot him dead at the scene. The car later crashed and caught fire during the attack.

Children and Staff Inside the Building at the Time of Michigan Synagogue Attack

The attack happened when staff members and children were present in the synagogue’s early childhood centre. It was later confirmed that around 140 children and staff members inside the building were not injured.

However, one of the security officers was hit by the vehicle but later regained consciousness. In addition, dozens of law enforcement officers who responded to the attack also received treatment for smoke inhalation resulting from the fire.

Michigan Synagogue Attack Possibly Trigger Linked to Middle East Violence

It is still under investigation what exactly prompted the attack. It is reported that a day before the attack, Ghazali had posted photos on social media of his relatives who had allegedly died in an Israeli attack on Mashghara, Lebanon.

Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun stated that Ghazali had experienced personal losses in the war. “Ghazali lost several members of his own family, including his niece and nephew, in an Israeli attack on their home in Lebanon.” It is still unclear if these events prompted the attack.

FBI Investigating as Targeted Violence

The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community. However, the motive behind the crime still remains a mystery.

The Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the investigators are still trying to ascertain the motive behind the crime.  “What drove this person into action has to be determined by the investigation.”

Israel Iran War: Regional Conflict Increasing Tensions

The attack happened during a time when tensions were high in the Middle East. There had been recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon just after the nation conducted a joint attack with the United States against Iran on February 28.

In retaliation against the Israeli attack, the Hezbollah militia fired missiles against Israel on March 2. This is the first attack since the end of the war between the two nations in November 2024.

The conflict has already caused significant disruptions in the region, with an estimated 800,000 people displaced from Lebanon. The conflict has claimed the lives of at least 680 people.

What Donald Trump Said About the Synagogue Attack

US President Donald Trump responded to the case by commenting on the matter. He said that the attack was a “terrible thing.” The authorities said that federal and local authorities are still investigating the case to know the circumstances that led to the motive for the attack.

Second Attack on a House of Worship in Michigan

This was the second violent crime at a place of worship in Michigan in a year. Last year, a former Marine attacked a church north of Detroit by firing at people and burning the building. He shot four people before burning the building. The FBI later said that the motive for the attack was the “anti-religious beliefs” held by the perpetrator against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The investigation into the latest crime at the synagogue is ongoing as officials seek to know all about the crime.
