Microsoft Outlook Outage Today: For many people, checking Outlook is part of the first few minutes of the workday. But users relying on Microsoft’s email service have faced another disruption, with Outlook experiencing widespread problems that affected email delivery, authentication and mailbox access. Reports surged on Monday, August 31, and some issues continued into Tuesday as Microsoft worked to restore normal service.

Microsoft has acknowledged the disruption and linked it to an authentication configuration used by multiple Microsoft 365 services. While the company has applied a fix and reported signs of recovery, some Outlook users may still experience problems, particularly with email search and other connected features.

Microsoft Outlook Outage Today: What Happened?

The Outlook disruption began on Monday, August 31, when users started reporting problems with Microsoft’s email platform. Downdetector recorded a sharp increase in complaints, with reports reaching more than 6,000 at the height of the disruption.

The main problems centred on Exchange Online, the cloud service that supports Microsoft’s business email infrastructure. Users reported difficulties sending and receiving messages, accessing mailboxes, logging in and searching through email.

Microsoft later confirmed that the problem involved a core authentication configuration used by multiple Microsoft 365 services.

Microsoft Outlook Down: What Problems Are Users Facing?

The outage has affected Outlook in several ways. Some users have been unable to connect to Exchange Online, while others have experienced delayed email delivery or failures when trying to send or receive messages.

Mailbox search has also remained an issue during the recovery process. Microsoft said email connectivity was improving, but search functionality could continue to experience disruption.

The reported problems include:

  • Difficulty sending emails
  • Delays in receiving messages
  • Failed Outlook logins
  • Problems opening mailboxes
  • Mailbox search failures
  • Authentication errors
  • Slow or incomplete Outlook functionality

Downdetector data also showed that receiving messages, login problems, and app-related issues accounted for a large share of user complaints.

Microsoft Outlook Outage Cause: Authentication Configuration Issue

Microsoft has traced the disruption to an authentication component rather than a cyberattack.

The company said an issue with a core authentication configuration affected Exchange Online and other Microsoft 365 services. Because authentication sits at the centre of access to many Microsoft services, the problem had effects beyond Outlook.

Microsoft’s investigation found that the affected configuration was preventing authentication components from working as expected across part of its infrastructure. The company then tested mitigation measures before expanding the fix.

Microsoft Outlook Latest Update: Is the Outage Fixed?

Microsoft has started restoring the affected services, but the company has not treated the incident as completely resolved.

The latest recovery information indicates that email availability has improved, while Microsoft continues to monitor the remaining affected infrastructure. Search and some dependent services have taken longer to return to normal.

Microsoft reported, “Service telemetry continues to indicate recovery”

The company also said, “As recovery signals continue to trend positively, we’re maintaining extended monitoring across affected service workflows to ensure improvements are sustained.”

Microsoft has therefore moved from active remediation towards extended monitoring as it checks whether the improvements remain stable.

Microsoft Outlook Outage: Other Microsoft 365 Services Affected

Although Outlook has been the most visible part of the incident, the authentication problem also affected several other Microsoft 365 products.

The affected services include:

  • Exchange Online
  • Microsoft Teams
  • OneDrive for Business
  • SharePoint Online
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot
  • Microsoft Purview
  • Microsoft Defender XDR
  • Microsoft 365 Admin Centre
  • Universal Print

Users of OneDrive and SharePoint reported problems loading content, accessing search results and opening files. Teams users could also experience problems with search, calendars and presence information.

Microsoft Outlook Outage Today: What Did Microsoft Say?

Microsoft warned that users could encounter a range of issues while the recovery continued.

It said, “Some users may also experience delayed or failed file opening, Office policy-label retrieval, OneDrive synchronization, mobile camera upload, and video playback.”

While that warning covers connected Microsoft 365 services, Outlook users have primarily faced email delivery, authentication and search-related problems.

Microsoft also said, “Service telemetry continues to indicate recovery, with availability increasing across previously impacted scenarios as remediation progresses.”

The company added, “We’re validating that authentication, connectivity and search operations are returning to expected service levels while monitoring for any residual impact and confirming that the remediation is delivering broad mitigation across affected Exchange Online scenarios.”

Microsoft Outlook Outage Today: Are Users Still Reporting Problems?

The number of reports has fallen sharply from the peak seen on Monday, but outage-monitoring data continued to show some complaints on Tuesday morning.

At around 6 a.m. PT, fewer than 550 Outlook-related reports were being recorded, while the number had dropped below 460 by about 6:30 a.m. PT.

That decline suggests that the situation has improved considerably, although the remaining reports show that some users may still experience problems.

Microsoft Outlook Down: What Should Users Do?

Users who continue to experience Outlook problems can first check Microsoft’s service status information before changing account settings or reinstalling the application.

If Outlook remains unavailable, users can also try accessing their account through another supported device or browser. However, if the problem originates from Microsoft’s Exchange Online infrastructure, local troubleshooting may not immediately restore access.

Users who depend on Outlook for important business communication should also avoid repeatedly changing account credentials while Microsoft continues its recovery work.

Microsoft Outlook Outage Latest Status

The latest developments indicate that the worst of the Outlook outage has passed, but Microsoft continues to monitor the service.

The company has already applied remediation to the affected authentication component and has reported improving service availability. However, the incident demonstrates how a problem in a shared authentication layer can quickly affect email and several other cloud services at the same time.

For Outlook users, the key question now is whether email delivery, authentication and mailbox search can remain stable as Microsoft completes its extended monitoring.
