According to federal prosecutors, 42-year-old Derrick Callella of California accepted a plea agreement after pleading guilty to two felony charges. The charges include sending a ransom demand across state lines and using a telecommunications device to issue threats.
Under the plea deal, Callella will serve five years of probation. His sentencing has been scheduled for September 10.
The U.S. Department of Justice said Callella acted as an imposter, attempting to exploit the ongoing investigation after earlier ransom demands had already been reported in the media.
“Through the course of the investigation, it was found that Callella was acting as an imposter, trying to take advantage of the ongoing situation,” federal prosecutors said in a statement released in mid-February.
FBI: Multiple Ransom Notes Still Under Investigation
Despite Callella’s guilty plea, the FBI emphasised that the broader investigation remains active.
In a statement posted on the FBI Phoenix X account on July 1, authorities said investigators have received several ransom notes since Guthrie disappeared.
According to the FBI, some of those communications have been identified as fraudulent extortion attempts, while others have not been ruled out and continue to be examined.
The agency said:
“The FBI and its task force partners have received several ransom notes over the course of this investigation.”
It added that some ransom demands lacked legitimacy, while others “may potentially be legitimate and are still being investigated as such.” Officials stressed that the case continues to be treated as a kidnapping-for-ransom investigation.
