Now, an FBI special agent and former Arizona cop have raised a theory about the potential route the culprit might have used.
Nancy Guthrie Case Latest News: FBI Special Agent’s New Theory
FBI Supervising Special Agent Steve Moore and retired Pima County SWAT Commander Bob Krieger recently made a chilling claim about the route that may have been used by Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapper. According to him, the suspect may have used the Tohono O’odham Nation as an entry point into Mexican territory.
“If I were a betting man and someone said they absolutely went into Mexico, I’d say they probably went through the reservation at some point” Krieger said. Moore seemed to agree with Krieger and stated “You could go miles without seeing any kind of resident but at the same time, if anybody does see you and doesn’t recognize you, you’re going to stand out, especially if there’s two or three of you – or, a vehicle is going to be a big deal”.
Moore also stated that the investigating authorities should consider this theory under the “global concept of what could have happened”. The case, now in its fifth month is being jointly handled by the Pima County Sheriff Department and FBI.

Recently, a group of volunteers from the Buscando Corazones Nogales organisation in Mexico went to search for the potential grave of Savannah Guthrie’s 84 year old mother in Northern Mexico’s Nogales after receiving anonymous tips. And the search has only intensified, despite no sign of the grave or Nancy Guthrie’s potential remains.
This ongoing search prompted the Pima County Sheriff Department to issue a new statement. “We are aware of reports regarding an anonymous tip related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation that was provided to a group in Mexico. At this time, we have not been contacted by Mexican authorities”, it read.
It then went on to add that “This investigation is ongoing and active, and we will continue to follow up on any credible information”.
Nancy Guthrie Case Latest News: What’s the Wrench Attack Theory?
Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has suggested that Nancy Guthrie’s case could be one of a ‘wrench attack with a proxy’. According to her, it could potentially be a ‘huge breakthrough’ in the case which was upgraded from a missing persons case to a homicide investigation this month.
“It’s the biggest public break in Nancy’s Case, as CertiK, arguably the leading crypto security company in the world, has designated Nancy’s abduction as a wrench attack by proxy”, she shared via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
And according to CertiK, a firm that specialises in blockchain security, “The 84-year-old mother of journalist Savannah Guthrie was kidnapped as part of a $6 million bitcoin ransom demand, illustrating the documented trend of proxy target selection already identified in our 2025 report”.

Data from a mobile app that was connected directly to Nancy’s pacemaker. The FBI noted that data was recorded till 2: 28 AM and then abruptly stopped.

Doorbell video footage from her home, which showed a masked man with a black backpack tampering with her claim. Authorities are actively searching for this man, who is either 5’9″ or 5’10” tall and has a medium build.
Nancy Guthrie Case: Who are the Suspects?
There are no official suspects in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, as per the latest developments. While many suspected that local fugitive Coral Michelle Smith could be a suspect, her involvement was formally ruled out.
The cops are also looking for an unidentified masked man, who was caught tampering with Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera. Some people have suggested that Nancy Guthrie’s absconding son in law, Tommaso Cioni might be involved. However, Chris Nanos ruled out the involvement of any family members.
