New theories have emerged in the high-profile Nancy Guthrie missing case, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today Show” host Savannah Guthrie, as investigators explore whether the case may involve a violent crypto-linked kidnapping strategy known as a “wrench attack.”

Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has suggested that the incident may not be a random abduction but part of a growing trend where criminals use physical violence to access cryptocurrency wealth. The case has already drawn national attention after surveillance footage and forensic evidence pointed to a possible forced abduction from her Arizona home.

Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her residence in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson on February 1, and authorities believe she was taken against her will. However, no arrests have been made so far.

A new line of investigation has focused on the possibility that Guthrie’s disappearance may be linked to a crypto-related “wrench attack.”

Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI agent, said the case shows similarities to crimes where attackers use physical force to extract digital wealth information.

“I have been speaking about a wrench attack that took place literally about 90 minutes North of Nancy’s house, the day before Nancy was attacked, since early March,” Coffindaffer wrote on X.

She added that the pattern of events “checks a lot of boxes” consistent with crypto-motivated kidnappings.

Nancy Guthrie Disappearance in Arizona

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home on January 31, before being reported missing the next day.

Investigators later discovered drops of blood on her front porch, which raised concerns of a violent abduction. The FBI also released doorbell camera footage showing a masked man near the residence on the night of her disappearance.

Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect, but investigators continue to treat the case as a possible kidnapping.

Nancy Guthrie Case Latest Update: What is a ‘Wrench Attack’?

A “wrench attack” refers to a physical crime where attackers use threats, kidnapping or violence to force victims to hand over cryptocurrency passwords or wallet access.

The term originated from a satirical XKCD webcomic that described how attackers could bypass digital security using physical intimidation instead of hacking. Experts say these attacks often target individuals linked to visible cryptocurrency wealth or online financial activity.

Ex-FBI Detective Raises Doubts on Crypto Motive

Lisa J. Miller, a retired detective and former law enforcement executive, said the case may not fully match typical crypto-related kidnapping patterns.

She told Fox News that modern criminal groups are increasingly mixing cybercrime with physical violence. “What we’re seeing with Nancy Guthrie is not a typical wrench attack,” Miller said.

She also suggested investigators may be exploring alternative motives, including a possible targeted abduction linked to perceived financial status.

How ‘Wrench Attacks’ Work in Crypto Crimes?

Security experts say wrench attacks rely on real-world violence rather than digital hacking. Attackers often:

  • Track victims through online crypto activity
  • Identify high-value targets using public posts
  • Carry out home invasions or kidnappings
  • Force victims to transfer digital assets instantly

Unlike traditional cybercrime, these attacks combine physical coercion with digital theft.

Nancy Guthrie Case Latest Update: What Investigators Have Found So Far?

Authorities confirmed that Nancy Guthrie was likely abducted from her home after forensic evidence and surveillance footage pointed to forced entry or confrontation.

The FBI continues to analyse video footage and physical evidence collected from the scene. Investigators have not confirmed a motive and have not ruled out alternative theories, including financial targeting or opportunistic kidnapping.

The case remains under active investigation as federal and local authorities continue searching for leads in the Arizona disappearance.
