Nancy Guthrie Investigation Update: The tone of the investigation has changed, 29 days after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished out of her Tucson house. A desperate attempt to find something has turned into a systematic criminal investigation. The resources of law enforcement are becoming smaller. Thousands of hours of footage are being searched by the FBI. And celebrities, such as Reese Witherspoon and Halle Berry, are now adding to the desperate cry of the family to find out.
The Pima County Sheriff Department has earlier cut the field presence but initially it had deployed hundreds of officers and volunteers. The search stage has been completed to a large extent. The detectives are not decreased, but the patrol resources are diverted. The FBI has also changed part of its operational base between Tucson and Phoenix and that is an indication that operation involving ground search will yield to investigation analysis.
Law enforcement has failed to identify a suspect. Image footage of a masked man, ranging between 5’9 to 5’10, was released earlier as he was inspecting a doorbell camera several hours before Guthrie disappeared. According to former federal investigators, the case indicates the planned abduction. The DNA found on the home and a glove abandoned is undergoing forensic testing. The profile is confirmed to be mixed and which makes it more difficult to analyze.
FBI has gathered about 10000 hours of footage on surveillance of houses and roads in the Catalina Foothills. The videos have to be viewed on a case-by-case basis, but the digital effects are helping the analysts. A Ring camera that recorded 12 vehicles passing by at around 2.30 a.m. the night she went missing was examined but was dismissed as the ultimate lead. Investigators keep on soliciting other footage of residents in the area.
A veteran former law enforcement officer has said that the search for Nancy Guthrie has changed from rescuing the woman to recovering the body, due to the age of the woman and the amount of time that has elapsed and the care she would need. While the $1 million reward is still on the table to encourage tips, investigators are now mostly focused on the forensic and long-term investigation of the case.
On February 24, the Guthrie family promised an additional reward of $1 million which added on top of the already existing FBI reward of 100,000 dollars. The reward can be in the form of cash and tips could be anonymous. Savannah Guthrie in a recent video encouraged anybody who has any idea to speak up, but she admitted both hope and painful prospect, that her mother might not be alive anymore. Witherspoon and Berry were the ones who made it popular, reaching out to millions of people.
