The United States is locked in a fierce, head-to-head space race against China as both global superpowers accelerate timelines to land astronauts on the moon and establish a permanent geopolitical foothold on the lunar surface. Asserting that the competitive margins have narrowed to mere months, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman warned that Chinese aerospace capabilities far outmatch the historic challenge once posed by the Soviet Union.
The space agency is now shifting to an aggressive, nearly monthly launch cadence starting next year to build out permanent infrastructure before Chinese “taikonauts” arrive.
The diplomatic and technological showdown is rapidly coming to a head, with the targeted landing windows for both nations tightly overlapping. While the United States is currently aiming to return humans to the lunar surface by the end of 2028, Beijing has pushed its own targeted timeline forward to 2029.
A Geopolitical Dash Separated by Months
Appearing on CBS News’ “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Isaacman clarified that the race is no longer a distant projection but an active sprint. The NASA chief underscored that the timeline dividing American and Chinese footprints on the moon is incredibly slim, describing the gap as “months, not years.”
Isaacman acknowledged the formidable capability of the Chinese space program, validating their engineering trajectory while expressing firm confidence in American strategy. “The Chinese are moving at incredible speeds, and they are certainly capable of doing what the Soviets were not during the first space race,” Isaacman told Face the Nation. He added that the Chinese “will land their taikonauts on the moon — there’s no question,” framing the true battle as a test of what happens after touchdown.
“The question is, will the United States return before them, and will we do so in a different way this time? Will we build the base, establish that enduring presence? I think the answer is yes.”
The Multi-Rocket Strategy for Artemis III
To secure this competitive edge, NASA is aggressively advancing its Artemis program milestones following the successful crewed lunar flyby of Artemis II. The upcoming Artemis III mission, scheduled for next year, will serve as the critical orbital proving ground required to validate complex hardware before the high-stakes 2028 landing attempt.
The agency plans to execute a highly complex orbital assembly to test the viability of its deep-space landing systems. Isaacman outlined that on Artemis III, “three of the world’s most powerful rockets will come together and test out their capabilities in Earth orbit.” The administrator compared the tactical manoeuvre to the historical validation flights of the late 1960s, calling the architecture “very à la Apollo 9” in fashion. He emphasised that the rehearsal will provide NASA with “the confidence in our landers for Artemis IV in 2028,” solidifying what he termed “an achievable plan to put astronauts back on the surface.”
Constructing an International Space Station on the Moon
The long-term American strategy heavily relies on establishing infrastructure prior to the arrival of the crewed Artemis IV vehicle. NASA plans to deploy autonomous systems, starting as early as next year, to ensure that the initial landing site is pre-equipped with operational survival tools and scientific machinery.
Infrastructure development will see a massive uptick with missions launching on a nearly monthly cadence throughout 2027 to deposit equipment on the lunar south pole. According to agency projections, when American astronauts arrive in 2028, “there’s going to be a buggy there, a lunar terrain vehicle, there’s going to be a start of infrastructure.” Isaacman predicted that by the early 2030s, the moon will function much like the International Space Station does today, hosting international crews for extended rotations as humanity develops the vital survival systems necessary for an eventual leap to Mars.
