Nepal’s latest general election has produced one of the most dramatic political upsets in recent years. Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen Shah, has defeated former prime minister KP Sharma Oli by a huge margin in the high-profile Jhapa-5 constituency.

Final results show that the young leader secured 68,348 votes, while Oli, the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), managed 18,734 votes. Shah’s victory margin reached 49,614 votes, making it one of the biggest defeats suffered by a senior political figure in the election.

The outcome has drawn national attention because Oli had previously dominated the constituency and remained one of the most influential leaders in Nepalese politics for decades.

Nepal Election 2026 Result Update: Rastriya Swatantra Party Emerging As Major Political Force

Early counting trends released by Nepal’s Election Commission suggest that the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), the party Shah represents, is on track to secure a majority in the 275-member House of Representatives.

If confirmed, the result would mark a major shift in Nepal’s political landscape. The RSP, a relatively new political movement, has built its popularity on promises of cleaner governance, transparency, and economic reforms.

The Jhapa-5 seat had attracted intense attention during the election campaign because Shah had been presented by his party as its potential candidate for prime minister.

His decisive win over a former prime minister has therefore strengthened the party’s position and signalled growing public support for new leaders outside the traditional political establishment.

Nepal Election 2026 Result Update: Nepal Election Held After Months Of Political Unrest

Nepal held the general election on March 5, only six months after widespread protests forced the government led by KP Sharma Oli to step down.

The unrest, which erupted in September 2025, turned violent and left at least 77 people dead. Initially triggered by anger over a temporary ban on social media platforms, the protests soon expanded into a broader movement against corruption, unemployment, and rising living costs.

Large numbers of Gen Z protesters and young voters took part in the demonstrations, demanding political reforms and greater accountability from the government.

Many analysts believe that the anger expressed during those protests later translated into strong support for new political figures in the election.

Nepal Election 2026 Result Update: From Kathmandu Mayor To National Political Challenger

Balendra Shah first became a household name in Nepal after winning the 2022 mayoral election in Kathmandu Metropolitan City as an independent candidate.

His victory at the time surprised many political observers because he defeated candidates backed by major political parties.

Shah served as mayor until January 2026, when he stepped down to enter national politics. Soon afterwards, he joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party and quickly emerged as one of its most prominent leaders ahead of the general election.

His campaign focused heavily on tackling corruption, improving governance, and giving younger citizens a larger voice in politics.

Nepal Election 2026 Result Update: Balen Shah; From Rapper To Politician

Balendra Shah’s journey into politics is unusual compared with many traditional leaders in Nepal.

Born on April 27, 1990, in Naradevi, Kathmandu, he comes from a family with roots in Mahottari district in Nepal’s southern plains near the Indian border.

Before entering politics, Shah built a reputation in Nepal’s music industry as a rapper, songwriter, and producer. Performing under the stage name “Balen,” he launched his music career in 2012.

Many of his songs criticised corruption, poor governance, and urban challenges, messages that later became central themes in his political campaigns.

Apart from music, Shah also has a strong academic background. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Himalayan WhiteHouse Institute of Technology and later completed a master’s degree in structural engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University.

After the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, he also participated in rescue and infrastructure assessment work, helping evaluate damaged buildings and structures.

His combination of activism, youth appeal, and anti-corruption messaging helped him attract strong support from Gen Z and millennial voters, many of whom feel frustrated with Nepal’s traditional political elites.

With his latest election victory, Shah has now emerged as one of the most influential young leaders shaping Nepal’s political future.
