A Hindu temple in Richmond Heights, Ohio, was attacked with bricks on Friday afternoon, leaving several windows shattered. Priests and devotees were inside the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir when the incident took place, but no injuries were immediately reported.
The attack occurred at around 1:30 pm in the Greater Cleveland area, according to the Hindu American Foundation (HAF).
What happened at the Ohio Hindu temple?
Bricks were thrown at the temple building, damaging the property and breaking windows, according to the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA).
The incident took place while religious activities were underway and people were present inside the temple. Surveillance footage is available and could assist investigators in identifying the person or people responsible.
No suspect has been publicly named and authorities have not announced any arrests so far. The Hindu American Foundation said it had notified the FBI and civil rights authorities and was coordinating with temple leaders following the incident.

Is the Ohio temple attack being treated as a hate crime?
The motive behind the attack has not yet been established. HAF has described the incident as a possible hate crime and called for those responsible to be identified. The organisation’s executive director, Suhag Shukla, said hostility directed towards Hindu Americans online could potentially manifest as violence against religious communities.
CoHNA has also urged Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and local law enforcement to condemn the incident and take action.
However, there has been no confirmed law-enforcement finding that the attack was religiously motivated. The hate-crime characterisation has so far come from Hindu advocacy organisations.
Attack raises concerns ahead of Navratri
The incident has caused concern among members of the local Hindu-American community, particularly with Navratri approaching.
Hindu organisations in the US are also observing Hindu Heritage Month in October. Community groups have renewed calls for greater security at Hindu temples and other religious sites.
CoHNA has previously documented incidents involving Hindu places of worship in the US, including vandalism at temples and damage to a Mahatma Gandhi statue. Those previous incidents, however, do not establish a connection with the Ohio attack or confirm that Friday’s incident was motivated by religion. The investigation into the Richmond Heights temple attack remains ongoing, with authorities yet to identify a suspect or determine the motive.
